What you describe sounds like the EVAP solenoid. What year and engine.
Post any pics that you can.

Sounds like the sport setup. There are two more bolts on the bottom. The bracket bends and mounts underneath. Deep socket or extension will help.

Probably should've mentioned this before but purchasing an OEM EGR solenoid is highly recommended. Myself and many others have had similar issues with these aftermarket ones acting up. One I tried was allowing the valve to hang open causing it to stall once along with an intermittent low, rough idle. Never did throw a code either. You can test its operation by pinching the yellow and blue vacuum lines separately. Also check the resistance of it. One I had was way out of spec. Problem with this however is it needs to be tested off the vehicle or you will get an inaccurate reading. Check it however regardless if it's OEM or not as these seem to be rather picky even if the OEM is purchased. They should ask you for your vin when purchasing because some models apparently went through a change mid model year which is why I believe the aftermarket ones have issues. It's also dependent on if it's a Montero or a Montero Sport. Even though the engines are the same some of the parts vary. Alot of parts suppliers often confuse the two.
If it checks out follow up with other issues being a possibility like the IAC as mentioned.

Ok, so there is an EGR solenoid that controls the EGR valve. This solenoid may be malfunctioning and causing the EGR valve to stick open. Too much exhaust is feeding back into the intake upon start up which may cause the shut off. It's actually quite rare that this solenoid fails as far as I know and I only recently learned how to test it. Here is a video that shows how you can test both the EGR and EVAP solenoids. www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2RLYw1ijWc&t=711s
