I have had my montey for about two months now and it’s not had heat since I purchased it and I live in Alaska where heaters are a must! The blower motor works fine and cold air is what I get on all settings. The temp gauge never reaches mid point and it doesn’t take very long to get to a resting point either. I just replaced the thermostat and a new radiator was installed previous to my purchase (it had front end damage). There was a heater core that was brand new in the back floor storage compartment so my guess is that it just needs this installed. I know nothing about vehicles and I’ve heard this kind of installment takes about 8 hours and requires the dash to be removed. I can’t seem to find any diagrams to help me with locating where the heater core is to even find the old one and I don’t have a service manual.
Another problem I’m having is engaging into 4WD. The shifter has a lot of play in it but will not shift into anything other than what’s it’s currently in. I’ve read a few threads referring to my problem but again, I am no mechanic. I have removed my middle console all together for repainting and was wondering if there was anything I could do myself to address the problem? I did read that my model doesn’t have solenoids-(?). Someone please advise me! I love this SUV and I would love her even more if these issues were fixed. Any information (down to the tools I’ll need) is definitely appreciated! TIA!

Sounds like your heater core has been bypassed. I bought an 03 AWD that has the same issue. You're extremely lucky that the previous owner left you a new heater core because new ones are very difficult to find in stock and/or at a reasonable price. I'm still looking, and it's been over a year. I hear that it's a long process to replace and don't look forward to it. The physical location of it is basically just behind the radio/console area. I can help with some documentation and will post it here when I find it. Do you have the rear heater option? There is a fulcrum ball in the transfer case shifter that will crumble after awhile and cause a lot of slop in the shifter itself. I had to replace this on mine and it wasn't a difficult job as long as you have to tools to beat a pin out of the shifter handle. It's a job that requires the console to be removed, so now would be the perfect time for you to replace it. This is the exact one I bought and it fit perfectly: Fulcrum Ball

Yea it’s not that difficult just time consuming. Took me an hour and half to break it down to the hvac system. Still have to remove that to remove the core. Was waiting on replacement before all that. Should’ve taken pictures.
Just start at the bottom of the dash and work your way up. Unplug battery to disarm airbags. Very important!, and once it’s disconnected do not hook the battery back up until the pass airbag is remounted and reconnected. Wait 15 min before disconnecting airbag. Drivers knee bolster (6screws), glove box(3 or 4), speaker covers(2 or 3), instrument cluster trim (2 screws, rest clips), radio trim (4 clips, careful with bottom)/radio, (4 screws) hvac controls (4 screws), actual instrument cluster (4 screws), 2 bolts for the pass airbag the cover pops out then slide it up and out, then the dash is only like 8 fasteners, 2 of which are under the defrost vents on top in the corners, rest are fairly obvious. Then there’s the support brackets in the middle. To make things easier it unfortunately requires the bottom half of the front center console to be removed which requires removal of the rear portion. You could probably get away with skipping this step but if yours was leaking it will facilitate cleaning under the dash and carpet.

Your directions make it seem much less intimidating of a job. Still need to discharge the AC as part of the process, right? Or is this not necessary?

Unfortunately you will need to discharge the system to pull the box out. I had to replace my blend door lever because I made a mistake with a hammer and a long screwdriver trying to "unstick" it back when I didn't know any better. When I tore the dash apart I spent longer than I should have trying to find a work around when I should just had it discharged.

You can get it out with discharging the a/c. Just unbolt the airbag module and the bracket, carefully, don’t drop it or bang it around. That harness needs to be out of the way as well but you don’t have to disconnect it. Then the support brace for the drivers knee bolster, shifter handle (should’ve mentioned this before as it needs to be out of the way to slide the radio out). Loosen all the bolts for the hvac system and the little access door on the black a/c box. Don’t have to remove the bolts just loosen so the whole unit can move around.

This is one of those things that will really be better understood once I start digging into it, so will have to reference this thread at that time. It would be great to not have to break the seal on the AC system, but will do so it if it's necessary.

Yea that’s another can of worms and expense. I avoid messing with that like the plague. Every time you open it you run the risk of contamination. It would make it easier but there’s even more to disassemble and remove.

Yea so it can be done without messing with the a/c. It was a little tricky going back in but wasn’t all that bad. This btw was on my friends 02.

Yea man no worries. When going back in fit it over the a/c box the best you can. Once the pipes are through and it’s on all 4 studs it’ll sit where it needs to. Then get the pipes through, then around the top studs and up and over the bottom studs. It’s sounds more difficult than it is. I did however remove the bolts for the a/c box and just loosened the other two. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
