When I'm idling in gear I can hear a high pitched squeal coming from the bell housing of the transmission. It only does it in gear while idling. If I pull up next to a long wall (ex. fast food drive through) and I let my foot off the brake to coast the noise goes away but the moment I stop it starts up again. It is noticeably louder in reverse gear. If I open the hood and listen for a belt slipping, there is no squeal, however if I put my head in the wheel well or under the vehicle, I can clearly hear it coming from the bell housing/transmission. (Note: Parking brake is on and chocks under wheels when in gear so I don't run over myself)
AFAIK, the transmission filter has never been changed but the fluid has been changed twice with SPIII fluid (Oreilly Global 1). Transmission Model: 30-43LE Serial Number: 97HE413326 Year: 1998 (Gen 1) RWD Engine: 3.0 6G72

The filter is likely or unfortunately the torque converter.

The filter is likely or unfortunately the torque converter. Getting ready to take the pan off soon and see if the filter is the culprit. Finding time to work on the ol monty is difficult these days.

Changed the fluid and filter today and it's still making that darned squeal but not as loud. Hoping it will disappear within a couple days.

Nothing seems out of the ordinary other than the embarrassing noise. Probably going to have to cave and take it to a mechanic to get a proper diag.

Ok now it's making three distinct sounds that I believe are coming from the torque converter or maybe the input shaft bearing. Upon cold start/before tranny is warmed up, there is an odd hum/grinding noise that occurs like clockwork every 1-2 seconds apart and sometimes accompanied by a very distinct but random vibrational humming noise like the sound a wine glass makes when you run your finger around the rim of the glass and it's quite loud. After the transmission begins to warm up these go away and is eventually replaced by that hissing noise I mentioned earlier once it's up to operating temperature.
Other than these noises, the transmission still shifts like butter and I have no issue with TQ shudder that I'm aware of.

Wouldn't a repeating noise indicate a bearing problem somewhere?

Wouldn't a repeating noise indicate a bearing problem somewhere? I think the two new noises I'm hearing are coming from the water pump. The vibration noise I was talking about has gotten so loud it turns heads now. I popped the hood during one of these incidents and it's clear as day coming from somewhere front and center. I am also now leaking coolant from around the area the weep hole is supposed to be at. Need to tear down the front end as soon as I can.
