100 lbs if I remember correctly. Its in the owners manuals. Edward Awesome thanks! Don't know if you want to do this and its not a very good idea if you're off road, but Garvin makes pedestals that replace the crossbars and their rack bolts to that. I've had about 200 lbs on my Garvin without any roof issues. Again, I don't think this is a good idea from a weight perspective. 200 lbs that high up makes my '97s squirrely on the highway in the wind. I can't imagine doing it on my '03 Limited. The '00-'05s tend to be a little (lot) softer in the suspension. Edward

Edward I may have to look into that, I know my aftermarket Yakima bars on a previous vehicle could carry more and seemed stronger but I think for what it's being used as, it should be fine .after our long discussion in my other thread, I would do away with any roof load or basket/rack for that matter but I do use it for luggage every so often...prob more than I go off road at the moment..

did not mean to post... but since it happened... why are so many links already dead. grrrr.... I have the factory pedestal style rack. Can the cross rails off the other factory style that mounts to the drip rails be added to my style? I pulled a full drip rail mounted style off a junk yard car with that intention. like the following or do I have to convert over to the drip rail stlye? Is that even possible are the mounting holes already in my drip rail?

did not mean to post... but since it happened... why are so many links already dead. grrrr.... Stuff is getting old. There are two styles - '97-'99 and '00-'05. They're completely different and nothing is interchangeable. Neither mount to the drip rails. The '00-'05 is a 'pedestal' style that mounts to the roof. The '97-'99 has tracks that mount to the roof and the 'rack' mounts to the tracks. There are two different roofs on Sports. The two you show in pictures as well as the one that is on my '03 Limited. The two you show look identical so in theory it should be possible to retrofit the '97-'99 tracks to a '00-'05 'normal' roof without too much trouble. The raised roof on my '03 is a totally different shape. You might be able to mount the tracks to the roof but nothing would mount to the tracks. I believe the pedestals on the 'raised' roof are different so that style won't fit on anything but a raised roof. Edit: I have my '03 at the office and my friend has her '98 so I quickly confirmed that the tracks will not mount to the raised roof models and even if you could there would be absolutely no way to mount anything to the tracks. I just ordered new drip trim for my big Sport and if I remember correctly, they said that covered all the way through '03-'05. Please don't quote me as I wasn't paying real close attention. Given that, the '97-'99 aftermarket drip rail mounts should work on newer Sports with the 'normal' roof. I took a good look at the raised roof - I think they would mount, but they'd have to be pretty tall to extend above the roof line. I don't done have any experience with the '00-'05 style on either style roof. The '97-'99 track style rack is pretty simple. It would certainly be possible to get one (or at least the tracks if you want a Garvin) and mount it on your roof. The roof rack used to be a dealership install option. I went through this when I had to replace the roof on my big Sport. The tracks are attached to the roof via screws that screw into sheet metal nuts. Expanding metric metal sheet metal nuts are available - I had to buy some to attach the interior console to the new roof since the new roofs don't come with the nuts. To install the tracks you'd need to remove the headliner, ceiling console, some interior pillar pieces, rear cargo upper side panels and all or part of the roof insulation. Set the rails with the cross bars attached on the roof, mark the holes and go from there. The nuts will need to be sealed with something to prevent leaks. I might also point out that if you're going through this much trouble this is a good time to replace the roof insulation with better/different insulation. I did my big Sport with the aluminum backed insulation and then put it shiny side out to keep the interior cooler when we were in the desert during the summer. Well worth the $50-60 for the insulation and $10 for a big can of 3M spray adhesive. Edward

Thanks yet again Edward. The montero sport I pulled the rack off of was the same roof as mine, as far as I could tell. Everything on the donor Sport looked just like mine. I had hoped the receiving nuts/mounts for the 97-99 were present on the 00-05 already, just under the rubber on the roof. I had planned to pull my roof rubber, if I had to, and check under it. However if there are no mounting holes present from the factory, then I will be opening a can of worms. (I'm so used to how GM did things, sO much was interchangeable btw years & models.) However, I had been planning to replace the headliner soon. The previous owner and my daughter managed to explode sodas on the light grey headliner, so I might just roll both projects into one.

No, they're not even there on the '97-'99. They're expanding blind nuts so it would be very difficult to have those there 'just in case'. And they sit a few inches out from the rain channel so they'd also be visible. There's nothing to pull that would cover up where the nuts would be. Just bare sheet metal where they mount. OUCH! That sucks. I haven't had that happen, but after half a million miles of driving with the windows open most of the time, mine is just dirty. I talked to the dealership about ordering in a new one last year and the still make them at least. I've just had a hard time getting motivated to replace it. Its not hard but its time consuming. I did finally pick up a ceiling console to replace the original that I managed to break getting out of the truck when I tipped it on its side years ago. Baby steps. Edward
