I am making a pretty radical change. I sold my '87 Buick Grand National, then I bought a 2002 Montero Sport. I moved from Oklahoma to Pennsylvania and I would like to make the transition from the drag strip to the trail. I am just looking for a start-up wish list of what I will need when I venture out into the woods. Coming from OK, I have been hunting and fishing since the age of 10. I have a good idea of what it takes to get to the lake or hunting spot. I have just never really attempted to kit out a truck before. I always just made due with the factory options on my dad's Toyota 4x4. I am just looking for an idea of what accessories are most available and most useful on the trail. My sport is a "02 ES, has the 3.0L, with 115,000 miles. I just put a set of Firestone Destination A/T 31x10.5x15 on it. I am thinking brush guard, lights, exhaust, lift, etc... I was just hoping that someone here might be able to recommend the smartest order to do things in. I will be using it as a DD 75% of the time, 4-wheelin the other 25%. Thanks in advance for any advice. I am open to all suggestions and feel very lucky to have found this site. You guys seem like an alright bunch

Thanks! I read a lot about them before I made the purchase. There are people getting some pretty ridiculous miles out of these things.

Take brush guard off your list and lights. A decent set of A/T tires or a set of mild M/T tires. Depends on the terrain. If you're looking at a lot of loose stuff and or mud off road it doesn't matter if it's only 25% - you'll need a set of M/Ts. A modest amount of lift. OME does a 2" that would be more than you'll probably need for a while. A skid plate for the front to replace the stock cheap sheet metal one. Manual locking hubs for the front with a steering stabilizer. Rock skids to protect the rocker panels - NOT NERF BARS. A hitch for the rear to protect the plastic fascia. ARB bull bar for the front - you can get a winch when you get around to it if you need one. Recovery gear - Hi-Lift, straps, tree saver, clevis', etc. Edward

That gives me a good place to get started. I just put a set of Firestone Destination A/T 31/10.5/15's on it. I suppose that means the OME lift will be my next step. I see by all the browsing that I have done that you contribute a lot of info around here. I appreciate the help. Bill

Very few people in the US that do as much with Montero Sports off road as I do or have done. I think it's down to just a few of us die-hards now. You can live without the lift for a while. Protect your vehicle first. Rock skids and the front skid plate. The hitch on the rear sounds stupid, but it'll help protect the rear plastic and it's cheaper than fabing a rear bumper. Get one that extends as far across the width of the plastic as you can. I run a tublar Hidden Hitch. Seems to work well. The Jeep and Toy guys will tell you the same - protect what you have first. Oh, and trim about 4-5" off the end the tail pipe. Leave it about 1" lower than the body. Even with the rear hitch that thing still manages to catch stuff. Edward

Sorry man, I just wanted to add on to your question. I am also a newbie. I have a same vehicle and just got a 15x8 with back space of 3.75 of rims... Did I read the thread correctly. 31 x 10.5 x r15 will sit fine without lifts? I just want to make sure I get the right size tires to make it look more beefier...
I greatly appreciate any feedback... Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance I have 31x10.5x15 Yoko A/T+s on my '97 LS stock rims - unlifted and unmodified except for a ARB bull bar. No issues either on or off road. Edward
