The engine just blew in my beautiful 2001 Montero Sport LS 4x4 at around 185k miles. I hate to sell it as junk since the body, interior, drivetrain, etc. is in excellent condition - all except for the 3.0 engine. A few minor door dings here and there; Sudan Beige; glass excellent; paint shines; always garaged; new tires - Hankook DynaPro ATM; might even throw in the Yakima Space Booster cargo carrier. Perfect for a project truck. I've seen used engines for around $1,100-$1,200 with a one year warranty. The picture is older. The MS has a different grille guard and no hood deflector, but you get the idea. Anyone in the Austin or Central Texas area interested? Email me at madstod@gmail.com

As for sales price, I'm not sure what's fair for all. Like I said it's a project truck, but once a new motor is in it, it's in great shape. $1,200? I can get a used engine with around 140k miles shipped to Austin for about $1,100-1,200 with a one-year warranty. Lamb's Auto won't put a used engine it it...only a "warranted" re-built, but they want $4,000 for the engine itself. Kelly Blue Book "good" condition is $3,634, which is what it would be with the engine replaced.
What caused it to blow? It's had some oil leaks out of the rear cam seals and one valve cover for a while. It probably had some lower oil levels at times causing it to run hotter than normal, possibly putting extra stress on the engine. Don't know. Oil and filter were changed regularly; timing belt replace at around 100k.

Is it seized up or will it just not start? Have you checked the compression?
