I see HID headlight kits are available for the Montero Sport now. Has anyone tried them, and or, is there a preferred brand? I changed my bulbs over to the Sylvania Silver Stars which are just a bit brighter and more white than the standard bulbs but would still like a better performer if available.

I advise against running those. The lamp housing was not designed to reflect an HID setup. It scatters light everywhere and blinds oncoming traffic!! Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

There are a few companies out there selling true HID kits that reflect the light properly and do not blind your fellow driver's. But they are spendy, like $400 IIRC. I don't know where to get them just have seen a few on line.

If you bought aftermarket housings that's a whole different story. I HATE when I see somebody coming at me with those kits in their factory housing that is NOT designed for it. Grrrrrrrr. Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

Key is having the bulbs dipped so they only emit light at the same points as a halogen. You get the scattered beam cause hid lamps are longer than halogens. Best to dip them yourself cause every bulb sits in the housing at differant spots. Lay a halogen bulb next to it and mark where the halogen is equal to the hid bulb. Have to dip/coat the top and bottom of the hid bulb.

Errrrrr not so much. The halogen and HID is like comparing apples to oranges. I've tried both in mine. The HID DID NOT WORK. My theory remains the same. The High Intensity Discharge bulb is more of a plasma type bulb after all of the scientific mumbobjumbo is done. There is no REAL way to capture all that light CORRECTLY and put it in a useful area. Its like taking a port a potty and sticking a grenade in there and saying. This will withstand the force. I agree that a dip method, will work in making it less blinding. However spending the money on a Halo kit is IMO a better overall investment, not only because you get the HID headlights. But also because they can add re-sale value to the car.

I can see your point bd, not disagreeing with you cause i know where you're coming from but, you know car manufacturers do the same. there are numerous cars out there that use the same reflective type lamp housing for halogen or the optional hid package that are DOT approved. they just do the dipping/capping technique and/or use light shields to direct the light one way or another. when done like that just think of them as silver star supernovas.

The DOT approved are designed differently. Its not just taking some "magic" dip and calling it good. Measurements and angles. Reflection. All different. I know acura makes a true HID headlight that does not use a halo but guess what. Its DESIGNED to direct that light to actually be useful. The halogen and HID bulb are completely different. For instance the new kia optimas use a regular halogen and a HID light. Completely different. Its the same principal of a radiator shroud. DIRECT THINGS so it is actually beneficial. I'm not just saying this or blowing smoke out of my wahoo. Its with 2 years of college and 2 years of design for engineering. Ya you can put those abominations in your car and the second you blind oncoming traffic and they wreck and sue you don't say I didn't warn you. Cops pull people over here left And right for those dumb things. Spend a little extra and get different headlights.

hey bd, not trying to be difficult or insult your intelligence. The D2R bulb are "specifically designed" for reflective housings. nothing more than a ceramic shield to block some of the light output. mostly used in cars that had an hid option . car manufacturers are not gonna spend the extra money to R&D two light housings, its not cost effective. D2R bulbs for Reflective halogen housing, D2S Shielded for projector housings, and the D2C are "universal" type. there is a lot more that goes into a conversion than just swapping bulbs but its not impossible.

Ya I see where you are going. I tried an HID kit on my 98 Ls. You still don't get it though. The 98 ms was never designed to direct that light. It SPRAYED light everywhere. Even after a friend with a shop re-aimed them. Still did the same thing. "MAYBE" on a different car? But not on this one. Ya you can try and contain a grenade with your body too. But it usually ends up in a bad way. I know what that bulb is. I tried several different bulbs to get a GOOD BEAM. it looked like a failed spotlight for border control. The HID is for HID housings
