I had silverstar ultras, and just made the swap to an HD kit, I had one brand new OEM light housing. On the 2001 it has the center peice that redirects light back against the reflector for focusing. I took a chalk mark on a brick wall at about 5 to 10 feet to compare the light parerns, they were super similar, except the light that was outside the focus area on the HID was about 2 times as bright, and inside the the focus circle was 2 times as bright as the silverstars. But the actual focus area remained the same. Now on the other side of the vehicle I had the original light housing. I polished up a bit about 2 years ago when I replaced the drivers side. And the light from the HID compared to the silverstar was all over the place. The light assembly didn't look that bad. But man it seriously glowed with the HID. Once I did a quick buff on it, it looked almost as good as drivers side for not scattering the light. But still noticeable.
After additional polishing and coating the passenger side, I brought it to work and used the equipment we have here to aim the lights on 750K$ 60 foot busses. After a day or 2 of driving at night I really liked how they looked.
I then had a few friends that were troopers drive by me and I drive by them etc to see if they found it blinding or if they would pull me over with them in. They said that only the passenger side had a little bit of the blinding unaided glow but not enough to warrant them stopping me.
Morral of the story, if it is a brand new housing with no scratches or hazing and the newer style headlamps it will be ok if aimed right. Any hazing though and you will blind people, or in the older style too. My fiancé has newer projector lenses for her low beams on her new sorrento's low beams and high beams normal reflector. Changed hers over, low beams look great, better then my low beams. But her high beams spread the light WAY too much. Not any brighter, but more blinding for everyone. My high beams are better then hers.
