"The moment when i heard my Monty start up that very first time, i nearly cried. was such a great moment to hear it again after 6 months"...heres the story of my truck, and still more to come. im new here to the forums, names tyler. i have a 2000 Montero Sport 4X4, not sure of the exact model, im thinking LS. but the story began about 6 months ago. i needed to get a vehicle, growing up. had a job, plus we moved, and new job. so much going on, was pretty stressfull. looking everywhere, i knew i wanted 4x4. we were looking at jeeps, toyotas, everything. But we couldnt find anything good enough. one day my father sent me a link...it was of an add on auto trader. it was a red 2000 montero sport 4x4, looked great in the pictures. later my dad told me "hey, im starting to like the mitshubishi montero. after doing some research, only 1 problem. with the engine. everything else is spot on. no AC problems, nothing... also better MPG. lets go take a look at it".

a nice looking truck in pictures i though. told my father to have a look at it, we think we were set...
a few days later, my dad was getting ready to go look at the truck, but i was getting ready for work. unfortunatly i couldnt go test drive the car and see it for my self. a few hours into work, i get a text saying that "its running great. everything is working. and we got the price from about 3000 to 2375 because they werent honest about the condition. tires were dry rot, been in 2 accidents. which we saw with a vin run, and you can see the damage on the bumper still. but other than that its all good"... was having good feelings about this, i only had 3300 to spend, so it will leave me with about a grand to get tires or whatever. i would have plenty of money leftover. 30 minutes later i recieve another text at work from my father. "you are now a car owner"... i was soo happy, finally. my very first cari can drive to work instead of ride my bike, i can go to the mountains, the beach. where ever i want to go. but 30 minutes after that, i get another text..."truck broke down at side of fwy, getting it towed to the house" ahhhhhhh, soooo stressfull, anyone here that has ever been in that situation knows. jnst buying a vehicle and it totally craps out on you, the exact same day.
when i got off work that day i got a ride from a co worker because i was hoping i could get picked up in my truck. but it was currently on the back of a flatbed on its way home. when i got home. my brand new DUD was being pulled up my hill shortly after me... the problem that arose while my dad was on his way home was the temperature rose suddenly. he pulled over, went to walmart to get coolant and put it it, drove for another 15-20 mins and temp rose before he called AAA, when he got home, we put water into it and water is pouring out from somewhere. we filled it back up after all the water drained quickly and drove it to our driveway (couldnt get it towed to our hose because roads are too tight, he wouldnt make the turn. so got it dropped off down the street.) after we parked, we started pulling the engine apart to diagnose the problem.the problem that we found was one of the heater hoses were bad, all the hoses were bad, cracks and all in em'. so, now we want to replace them, also ordered some other things, like belts and whatnot. but as we got further and further we noticed more and more problems, needed to replace all gaskets, and when we got down to spark plugs, we wanted to check the psi. all cylinders were great at about 160psi, but cylinder 5 had 120 or something, now we gotta go send the heads to go get machined... while i wait, do what i can. example. cleaning the parts that were full of gunk...by this point we have everything off of this monty, half an engine in the bay. just waiting on parts to put it all back together, which were coming in the next day.once the heads came back from getting machined, we can start putting it back together, soo many set backs causing it to take up to 5 months at this point to get to this point. but at the end, i know things will turn out great.
the parts are here, the truck is ready to get put back together, alot of work went into putting it back together, like a 10k piece puzzle. the very first night of the rebuild i did as much work as a could, stayed up from 3pm of one day to 10am the next day before going to bed. i got the majority together in one night, just have to wire it up and put intake back in. took a couple days to get that done because everyone is working, but soon enough we get it wired up, and plug in the battery. put all the fluids in, and now for the moment of truth, will it start. i put the key in the ignition and put the code in the radio and start it up. it only took a couple cranks before it fired up with a noise like nails on a chalk board, oops. shut it off and tighten a pulley for one of the belts to fix that, and gave it another shot. and starts up right away. after an engine rebuild. and being down for 6 months its finally alive. "The moment when i heard my Monty start up that very first time, i nearly cried. was such a great moment to hear it again after 6 months" was my first post on fb, and 10 mins later i had over 100 friends commenting. because they know how much work it took me to complete the rebuild, now the next step is to bring it to get smogged and then get my registration for it.
after getting my monty registered, i start bringing it to work. things are fine no problems. jnst a little smoke from oil that was spilled. but one day i get home from work on an 85-90 degree day, and once i park i see a lot of smoke from the engine bay, so i pop the hood and a cloud of smoke comes out. i can smell its from oil, but where is it coming from??? since its sprayed all over the engine bay. literally was everywhere... well there was a hose on the valve cover that we forgot to put back in,which runs from one side to the other, it allows oil in the valve cover to transfer sides. didnt do any harm to my truck but gave quite a scare. the next day my dad suggested to wash the engine bay. and i know to be careful about electrical components and water. so washing the bay i was wary about that. after washing it and spraying everything with heavy duty degreaser, i start it up to let it dry, and it has this rough idle and check engine light is on, i was upset because i was also getting ready to go visit my mom who i havent seen in 6-7 months for her bday. after taking air to the pistons i can pull the plug out of to get any moisture out, and to all electrical components and it still idling roughly, i let it sit in the sun for an hour. when i come back to it, its running better. and i take off to go see my mom. when i go to give her a ride and let her see my new truck, i go to start it up, and nothing happens. wondering if its the battery. i twist the key a couple more times, then go check the battery connection. after returning to try again. it starts, im wondering whats going on with it. was wondering if the 120 mile commute damaged something, when returning after the test drive. i pull into a parking spot on the road, switch it into reverse to back up , and when i go to straighten it out. i put it in drive and the truck lunged about a ft forward, seems like somethings seriously wrong, and ontop of that my battery died again when i went to check the problem with my truck switching into drive. ohhwell, going to spend time with my mom and deal with it later. no problems occurred later when i went to drive home, the next day i went to replace my battery and the following day i went to service my transmission, which i knew full well that there isnt a 100% chance that the servicing will solve the problem. i was ready to replace the tranny if i had to. but just wanted to see what servicing would do.
after some time driving to and from work, in to town and back. my truck isnt having any problems. i still have the dry rot tires on that dont have much time left. after no further problems from my engine other than it being allergic to water since when it rains while im driving, the check engine light will go on. and any far distance driving in the rain will eventually cause it to idle rough like when i washed it, but i decided to bring my truck offroad. the previous owner was a family, the daughter owned it, and then the mother used it around town, so it hasnt really seen offroad. with me owning it, its going to see plenty. lol, so me and my friend went to azuza canyon offroad park, had a good time and got pretty dirty, but my friends jeep got stuck in 3ft mud, lol
i also removed the stock running boards for the appearance to be higher off the ground. but that wasnt all the offroading i did, this xmas i went to bring my younger brother to lancaster to visit my mom again, and we went offroading up there, some nice trails all around. nice sights and all. had a good time, and on the way back from staying 3 days, we stopped by also in gormon ca, along the 5 fwy up the grapevine is a offroad vehicle area, only 5$ for a day pass so i had to stop by on that. overall, my truck performed very well, but is a little weak, when going in a angle, it is underpowered and stalled one time while offroading, going up hill. my truck stands just as the picture above, dirt and all. im looking at options that i could do, and i would love any help with my truck, eventually i want to get a lift. but i also have some small problems. oil leak in oil pan, can fix ONLY if front suspension is pulled off, oil pan is blocked, cant replace the gasket in it. also my passenger side exhaust has a leak, the bolt wont go in all the way so it has a little leak in it, which i dont know it the loss of back pressure caused the engine to stall when under pressure. but also im looking at sooner or later an engine swap from a 3.0L to 3.5L . i want to get new exaust, lift, tires and all. but not sure what to start with. should i stick with this engine that has 216k miles on it after teh engine rebuild, or just go around it, but hope you guys like the story and maybe you can stick around and watch it unwrap over time. but also, any help you guys can give would help out so much, this is my very first vehicle, and im going to bring it offroading
