Hey all, my first post, so hello to all.
I have just bought a 2001 Montero Sport XS 3.5L with 124K on it, what I'd like to know is, is there a way to check if the timing belt and water pump have been replaced. I ask because there isn't any history I can find to tell me if it's been done. I would expect the job to have been done at around the ~60K mileage mark, and now that it has 124K it's either been done recently or it's due to be done. So if there was a way I could check, something to look for, tell tale signs etc I sure would appreciate it if you could let me know.
Thanks in advance.

If it were mine I would check the fan nuts those are a pain to remove so you will see tool marks on those also check the drive belt tension pulley nuts I believe on that one you may be able to pull the LH side t-belt cover off or away then turn the eng. over and look for the writing on the belt if its new the writing should be pretty clear. If nothing looks disturbed then I would do both along with the auto tensioner and front cam oil seals, you will get an oil leak on the Pass. side right on to the alternator.

On the 3.5L on my 01 there is a little 12mm bolt on the top of the passenger side plastic timing belt cover that should pop off to inspect. Mine is missing so I know there should be something.

Hey thanks for your replies, I do have some good news... In the glove box was a receipt for something with a name and address of what was possibly the previous owner. So I did a google search and came up with a phone number.. worth a shot right. I call the number and explained to the guy that answered my reason for calling and he had all the info I needed!! he said the timing belt and water pump was changed out at 110k and it has 124K now, so that was a huge relief to know I still have a good amount of miles left before it needs replacing again.
