The problem with getting them out the scrap yard is you'll be in the same boat shortly depending on the mileage of the donor vehicle as they seem to fail around the same time regardless if the 4wd is used or not. With these things its always been a question of when, not if they will fail. I've been debating if it will be better to do that, buy the fulcrum and have it pressed in, or just purchase a new from the dealer. I'm afraid continue use with it broken will lodge pieces in the transfer case but at the same time going to the dealer you're essentially paying nearly $200 for that stupid fulcrum.

The pivot ball is plastic, or a material similar by the looks at least. So it's not as much of it being worn out from usage as much as it is a matter of heat and cold cycles, and just age, similar to all the micro cracks in the plastic of my radiator prior to replacing it. It was just a matter of time. Mine (knocks in wood) is still very snug and smooth shofting. But I've been following these threads a while now. Especially since I will have to remove my lever to bend it, it will probably be a good time to replace it. Do you guys use the ones with the nylon insert?

Just replaced the shifter fulcrum in mine a little while ago. The most time-consuming part of the whole thing was beating the pin out of the shifter; otherwise, it was pretty straightforward. I found that the easiest way to do it is to simply remove the four 12mm bolts from the shifter plate to remove the entire thing as a unit, place it on a worktable, and then remove the three 12mm nuts to remove the shifter from the plate and proceed to replace the fulcrum. My old fulcrum was completely gone (literally), nothing but a few very small stray pieces. I looked down into the transfer case, but couldn't see any sign of the old one. I hope it has disintegrated enough that it's not going to cause a problem.
