I need help in locating the Lever assy., Transfer Gear Shift for my 1998 Montero Sport 4x4 manual trans. The rubber bushing has dissolved and now it's imposable to shift into 4WD. Can anyone tell me when to buy this shifter or how to repair the rubber bushing?
Thanks, Adam Hart Southern California

I need this as well, I can shift into 4WD but the shifter has a lot of play. anyone? IF the shifter ball hasn't broken, you can get the shifter boot for both the manual transmission shifter as well as for the transfer case shifter from the dealership. They're around $15 each if I remember correctly. They're not available anywhere else that I'm aware of. The pivot ball that the shifter pivots on is not a part you can buy from an auto parts store or the dealership. You have to replace the entire shifter assembly. One or two have experimented with making their own replacement pivot ball. Do a search in General. Think that's come up several times in the last month or two. Edward

... argh well it comes with the territory I suppose (high mileage vehicle) And abused vehicles. Too many people think that if the shifters won't go into gear that they can 'muscle' them in and that does nothing but fracture that bushing. Then you're screwed. The jackasses at the Jeep dealership I bought my '03 from did that to the t-case shifter (besides putting the wrong fluid in the transmission) and broke the ball. The salesman was like, "I don't know what happened. I tried to put it in 4WD and it wouldn't go so I kinda forced it...." Edward
