That's what I thought it was, does not look like fun. Would it not only be MT but 4x4 specific also??

That's what I thought it was, does not look like fun. Would it not only be MT but 4x4 specific also?? Its not as bad as it looks. Socket wrench with a 3" extension takes out the two bottom screws. Unplug the plugs BEFORE removing the screws, though. The plugs are a little awkward and they're stiff so its a little awkward but not real difficult. Takes me about 10 minutes. No, on the old ECMs I don't believe that there is a difference. The 4WD isn't 'integrated' into the ECM as it is in the latter '00+ PCMs. The FSMs don't list a difference in pin-outs between anything but the A/T and the M/T. There is a difference in ECM/PCMs between engines. Though some are probably interchangeable from a pin-out standpoint, a 2.4L, 3.0L and 3.5L require different fuel and timing maps. In the case of the 3.5L - drastically different timing maps. The Gen 1 and Gen 2 Sports came with two or three different tire sizes and (in the US) four different gear ratios. I've never checked into the 2WD 2.4L and 3.0L but I don't think there's a different P/N for those ECMs. That would mean that they programed in base maps and let the ECM take care of adjusting fuel, timing, etc. for the difference between ratios and tire sizes. The easiest for you would probably be to find a 2WD and check the P/N on the box. Or call the dealership and start asking questions. 4x4 Extreme Sports - Montero Sport ECU/ECM PCM Info1999 Montero Sport 3.0L/3.5L Automatic PCM to 1997 Montero Sport 3.0L 5-speed Harness (PDF)Forgot. The ECM/PCMs are different between the FED and CAL vehicles. Edward

And I have a Cali unit... Ouch. The Gen 1 FED and CAL ECMs are very different. The CAL Sport has four O2 sensors. The FED Sport only has two. If I remember right, the '97 and maybe '98 CAL ECM had a couple other pins wired as well that the FED version didn't. The FED and CAL ECMs are definitely not interchangeable. I also don't know what the 'upgraded' version of the ECM is for the CAL vehicles. I don't even know if there IS one. Edward

Back to bigger tires/gears I found a 97 auto 2wd with 463? And another 98/99 can't remember which with 490. Interesting. That's a 3.0L with 4.90s and the new R4A51 4-speed A/T transmission (2WD I believe). Is that actually a Sport or is that a Montero? The V4A51 is the 4WD version of the A/T. Yes, but I'd recommend getting those out of a 4WD version. Trying to get both out of two different vehicle and get them to fit your axles would be interesting. BTW, when you snap a pic of the tags, snap a pic of the vehicle the tags are in if you could and post both. Edward

They were both sports, so I need to find 97-99 4wd of which I did see some. I will go back, and bring my jack and tools just in case. I do not have the 2nd edition of manual wich contains differentials. But auto axles are same as mt right?

Picture time... This has the 490 but will be a pain as we have to lift and secure it to be safe.
