Hello,
'97 montero 3.5. Purchased about 3K miles ago with not a lot of maintenance history. My tranny fluid is getting brownish and I was wanting to get a full tranny flush. The maintenance guy states that unless I am sure it was flushed before to not do the flush. He states that if it was never done, flushing now might flush out all the grime which is what is keeping the tranny gripping properly.
Any truth to this? I guess it is a roll of the dice either way. If I do not do it then it is just a matter of time. If I do it and what he says is true, I will need to repair/replace tranny which I do not have the $ for now.
Thoughts?
Thanks Jim

Those AISIN transmissions are bullet proof. Go to the dealership, ask for a full flush and fluid replacement. It will cost around 160 but it's well worth it.

I don't know about a local mechanic told me not do it he said that that flushing a tranny that has never been flushed before was not a good idea told me it can cause more problems. I'm currently going through the same dilemma, my monty LS has 220k miles and I have never done a flush so now I'm getting some shuttering that I need to address

I am not a mechanic but; I had 190K on my Montero sport, 2002. Dropped the tranny and fixed a bad seal. While in there I emptied out the torque converter and refilled the tranny. Drives AWESOME.
I say do it. I think this type of thinking is for old transmissions, like fro the 60 and 70's maybe older.
