Hi all. Well Im the new owner of a 2001 Montero Sport LS. Love this little thing. However, when I was under the front chassis greasing all the joints today, I noticed on both sides where the sway bar meets the control arm, there is what seems excessive room between the bar and bushings. I can literally move the bar around inside the bushings. The bushings look fine, no cracks or bulging. I have never seen this before. On almost all other vehicles I have owned the bar sits snug inside the bushing. Is this normal? Is this designed to have this room to move around? The bar also appears to be moved over to the passenger side slightly. I plan on loosening the center bushings (which hold it snug) and centering the bar so It fits equally among both control arms. Anyways, just wanted to get some insight from you guys. Thanks!

Should be tight....take one bushing off and get a replacement to compare size. If you are going to replace one though you might as well do all the front ones. My 2003 needed all new this past year...so about 11 years

Rockauto.com has the most options by the way. Otherwise you get stuck with 1 or 2 brands if you go to Autozone or Advanced.

Here is what it looks like. I can wiggle the bar inside the bushing , and the bushing wiggles slightly inside the clamp. This just seems not right to me. I have never seen one like this. Is this possibly the wrong bar or bushing set? Attachments:

Here is what it looks like. I can wiggle the bar inside the bushing , and the bushing wiggles slightly inside the clamp. This just seems not right to me. I have never seen one like this. Is this possibly the wrong bar or bushing set? Yes, that's normal. The bars should be able to move freely in the bushings. Unless there's more than 1/8" play between the bushing and bar I wouldn't get too worried about it. The bushings to clamp, though, should be snug. In other words, the bushing should not be wiggling around inside the clamp. Rubber bushings get old, hard, dried out and worn. Especially after a 100-200K. That one doesn't look particularly bad. See how hard the rubber is. If it's still soft, there's no play between the bushing and bracket and not too much between the bar and bushing, I don't think there's any reason to replace it. If you're getting weird thump, clunk noises you can't track down, this is a good place to look. If the bushings wear too much, you'll get a low grade 'thud' when you turn the vehicle - that's the slack being taken up between the bar and bushing. BTW, if you do replace them, !DO NOT! switch to polyurethane. Use the factory rubber type bushings. Unless you want to start fixing broken links and brackets, that is .... Use a good HP synthetic moly bearing grease like Valvoline between the bar and bushings. Wire brush the bar good and grease the bar up. Rub it into the metal. You don't need a ton of grease, but make sure the inside of the bushing and the bar are greased. Edward
