Just got a used 1997 Montero LS. Previous owner was not around when I paid & drove it home so could not really ask some questions on the functions of the car. There was also no printed manual available on the unit & I have tried to search for a digital copy on the internet but no luck. Maybe you could help me with some of the functions.
1. What is the use of the paddle stick on the right side of the steering wheel just above the windshield wipers? Is this related to the Cruis Control switch located on the left side of the driver? 2. What does the AT mode do? 3. Can't find the antenna up/down button. My radio gets choppy reception so I think it may have something to do with the antenna. I saw the antenna is hidden on the right front fender but could not find any switch to lift it up. The stereo has no function/button related to the antenna. 4. Are your sunroof panels also getting rusty?
Thanks.

Buy an owners manual. They're cheap and handy. ... 3. Can't find the antenna up/down button. My radio gets choppy reception so I think it may have something to do with the antenna. The cruise switch on the dash "enables" cruise control and when the light in the cruise button is lit up the lever/paddle is enabled. Pulling it towards you sets your current speed as the cruise speed while swinging it up and holding increases cruise speed and swinging it down decreases cruise speed. Note that tapping it up or down will change the set cruise speed by 1 mph up or down. If your cruise will not engage then check your brake light switch down at the pedal as the cruise uses it to shut down when you are braking and that function is wholly separated from the brake light function internally.

The cruise switch on the dash "enables" cruise control and when the light in the cruise button is lit up the lever/paddle is enabled. ... Same for the '97-'99 Montero Sport (the little brother to the Montero). Had this happen 10 years ago or so. After several hundred thousand miles, the brake switch needed adjusting. Several years ago the cruise started refusing to engage randomly and then one day refused to engage at all. Replaced the switch and everything has been fine since. Edward
