What are the best oem replacement shocks for 2003 montero sport xls 2wd i do not want to lift it yet but need a smoother ride with perhaps better travel The best straight OEM replacement shocks? Old Man Emu (OME), KYB and then Rancho RS5000s. At least that's the order I'd put them in. KIM, that these are high pressure gas shocks, so I don't know if you're going to get a 'smoother' ride out of them. I think your definition of 'smoother' is really softer - and these won't do that. If you're really looking for a softer ride, look at the cheaper low pressure gas shocks. These will be direct replacement - you won't get any extra length out of the shock. If you're looking for shocks you won't have to replace when you lift your Sport, that's going to be a little difficult for the rear. The front won't change - lifted or not - as its IFS. It has a fixed amount of travel, but you will have to measure for the rear shocks once you do a lift and especially if you run sway bar disconnects. There's no generic 'buy this, it fits' as there's too much variation between what different people do and the amount of travel they end up with. I don't see any point in lifting a 2WD but if that's what you want to do, KIM that you will end up with a stiffer, choppier ride. The exact opposite of what you say you want. Edward

I have Bilsteins and I am quite happy. If those are the same model I'm thinking of, they're also HP gas shocks. Guy run them on their Toys. Maybe not as stiff as the KYB Gas-A-Just, but about the same as the OME, I think. Edward

I got a good price through: Kolak@aol.com He specializes in Jeep parts, but he can get others as well. Quoted me 135 for the pair for front shocks, plus shipping.

Put Bilstein's on my 2002 Sport this past summer. Great shocks. Will use nothing else. I used the 4600 series.
