Did they specifically use SPIII fluid?

Went into shop today, where I regularly take my BMW, they know foreign cars well and very trustworthy. They specifically used the SPIII fluid, that is 100% true. They will check it out tomorrow. Slips between the 2-3 shift after warmed up about 500 rpm or so and terrible burning smell in my garage. When cold, it runs fine. They think it might have sprung a leak in one of the lines, I guess we will find out!

Were they able to flush it or just drain and fill. Is it leaking on the pavement. Should be noticeable if it is and if it is trans fluid is highly flammable so keep that in mind. Could try unplugging the battery to reset the shift points. Also check to see if it's at the proper fluid level at temp.

Got a bit more information. They said tranny is running fine they drove it 20 miles. The burning smell was a slow leak on the valve covers they said it can wait until next year when I do the spark plugs. Guess I will see how it goes when I pick it up this week?

Colted, well said! I know the answer to the burning smell, I will just change the valve covers when I do the spark plugs, shop said no big deal if you don't mind the smell. Guess the mystery is why the tranny was slipping and apparently no longer slips, haven't picked up the car yet, but they said they drove it 15 miles and drives fine? Hopefully it continues to be a mystery because that means the tranny is operating fine. When the tranny fluid and filter is changed, I guess the question would be is some slippage for a few days normal or out of the ordinary or anything to be concerned about?

MAKE sure that when you do your valve cover gaskets that the valve covers aren't warped. If they are you are SOL and need new ones. Also when changing the gaskets they are STUCK in there. I used a torch and a dull butter knife to heat them up and pop them out. I would use that copper shellac compound on both surfaces. That's what I did and have zero problems. The intake is a bear to try and align by sight when reinstalling. I would go to the parts store with a manifold bolt and match the threads to a couple long bolts. Grind the head off and thread into the block. That way it will perfectly line up with the other bolt holes.

Colted, you probably just made my day, because the EXACT same thing happened to me! Thanks for the continued information, and yes, I love my "new" winter vehicle!

Thanks for the continued information, and yes, I love my "new" winter vehicle! glad to know that......thought too that I'm giving up my Monty if my trasmission is shot.....but I wanted to keep it as long as it doesn't give me a really BIG headache that would warrant a replacement...also be wary about that notorious lifter tick that is really prevalent om the monty on this winter weather....

I couple of days ago, my 1999 Monty began to leak badly from the converter seal. My wife was about 5 miles away when it began to leak floods of oul leaving an oil trace on the streed. She barely made it to the home. Since there was almost no oil in it, I flushed out the remaining oil like the SM says: by taking out the hose from the radiator, let it idle 1 minute. About 2 quarts went out. It has around 160,000 miles.
I already took tranny down with a motorcyle hydraulic jack ( works really fine, used also 2 pieces of wood crossed, strapped the tranny pull it after everything is taken out) in order to replace the converter oil seal, I think I'll do the engine's and rear tranny seal also. Also will do the center carrier bearing replacement since it was collapsed but no noise or vibration noticed before.
I went to a Mitsu dealer and bought 10 quarts of DIA III ( manual states 9.3 quarts)
Will I have any slippage problem by replacing the lost oil and filter?
I already bought

If your transmission didn't have any issues prior to the fluid change and your old fluid was not dirty, you should not have any issues with the factory fluid.

I already did the carrier center bearing. By the way buy the Mitsu OEM one, much more grease and has a rubber lip on one side like a seal, it only goes one way, not like the universal' s. Had to use the same U Joint was in almost perfect condition ( made by Koyo) in order to finish the prop. Could install converter tranny seal and rear crankshaft seal with regular tools. But have a problem with the tranny rear tail seal. There is a protector like a bell surronding the area and is almost impossible to pry ot out with conventional tools. Any trick you may share with me in order to replace that rear seal?
