Wonder why it took so long for the Aussie SAR not to find them when that white Pajero/montero could have been easily spotted from the air? or they might not be searching at all?...

Wonder why it took so long for the Aussie SAR not to find them when that white Pajero/montero could have been easily spotted from the air? or they might not be searching at all?... Its not as easy as it sounds. It took something like 5-6 days to find a family in a mini-van stranded in southern UT towards Escalante a few years ago and they knew where to look. Finding one vehicle in the middle of a few thousand square miles of nothing is non-trivial. There isn't anywhere in the lower 48 that's anything like the Outback. Population density here in the US is way higher than AU. Nothing goes on for a LOT longer there than here. Edward

That park alone is over 1000 square kilometers in size .. almost 700 kilometers from any decent sized city ... The trip was supposed to be from Brisbane to Cairns .. 1500 kilometers, the trip was supposed to take 3 days, his wife rasied the alarm after day 4 when she had not heard from them The authorities were working off the last sighting of the vehicle, 250 Kilometers from where they were found. The farmer Tom decided to go looking after he thought he saw a vehicle matching that description and thought he had read enough bad news leading up to Christmas and wanted to do something about it. so set out on his quad to take a look for em .. 8 hours later they were found.

Yep, that's about what I read in re: your previous post. So, we (here in the US) have the lower 48 which houses most of about 400 million which are spread out a LOT more than in AU. So, if you left L.A. and NYC and took EVERYONE else out of the US and then sprinkled the extras randomly between LA and NYC you'd still have a higher population density than AU. I'm old enough to remember Colorado back when there was a total population of about 1.3M in a state with 104,093 sq miles. 95% of which lived on the front range with a small bit in Grand Junction. That's about 0.08 persons per sq mile - which doesn't take into account the 95% part for the actual population allocation. God help you if you got lost or broke down. You could go for weeks without seeing anyone. Not even close to how AU is now. Like dropping a beach ball into the middle of the Pacific. Edward
