So the 4wd shifter, when set to 4hi, moves left and right with quite a bit of play. I noticed when pushed left, the 4wd light goes out and 4wd disengages. Seems there should be some sort of mechanism that stops it from moving left and right while in 4hi because hitting some moderate sized bumps causes the shifter to wiggle left and disengage the 4wd momentarily until it goes back to the normal position. I just can't see this being very good on the transfer case etc. to disengage/re-engage so fast while driving. Anybody have a similar problem or know any fixes? It doesn't do it in 4lo or 2hi, only 4hi.
I did look for previous threads but they did not have solutions.

There are bushings on the transfer case shifter, they wear out and cause this issue. The shifter has to move left to be able to engage into 4L, but it shouldn't do it unwillingly.

Are they easy to get to and replace? Correct. The shifter is held over in 4WD HI by spring pressure in the t-case. If you use two finger tips, you shouldn't be able to move it left and right. On the other hand, you should not have to use any serious muscle to move it, either. Easy to get to? Yes. Easy to replace? No. BTW, while you're dealing with the bushing, you probably should replace the boot. Just soes ya know. The bushing isn't a replacement part. Typically you have to replace the entire shift lever. Which at least gets you a new boot. There's a thread on fabing a bushing from a few months ago. Try using 'search'. Edward
