I have no clue where you would even buy any parts for that??? Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards Junk yard or dealer. I haven't seen any of these in the junk yards around here and I highly doubt I'd find one like mine with the tire rack, from what you guys are saying. The dealer has the parts, I've looked them up. The prices aren't too appealing so fixing this isn't on my priority list at the moment. The back is occupied by subwoofers right now so I can't use the space anyways and not being able to open the hatch from the outside is kind of a plus considering it would make the speakers pretty hard to steal.

Didn't know any of that! I love learning about different vehicles, I didn't know the Sports with the tire racks were more rare or that they were worth more. The rarest: FED '99 Limited AWD 3.5L with the off road package, rear carrier and rear locking differential. And I actually had one and let my X take it. I've never seen another one. If I could find one I'd replace my '03 Limited AWD 3.5L in a heartbeat even if it cost me $10-12K. Sigh. I can't remember if the tire carrier was part of the off road package and the dash pod was separate or the other way around. I think it was the other way around. Anyway, all of this along with the locking differential was dropped in '00, so only '97-'99. I know that all the latch stuff and plastic covers are available from the dealership. The tire gate handle on my big Sport finally broke a couple months ago so I had to replace the plastic cover and handle. In the process I bought an entire latch assembly for spares. The rear license plate fascia is available as well as the plastic valence, light assemblies, internal metal fascia, plastic covers for the hinges, gate pin that holds it open, the plastic clips that hold the pin when not in use and the lock assembly. I THINK they said the gate itself is also available. The part that is NOT available is the alarm solenoid (right below the latch on the fascia). Unless they've started making them again, I bought the last one two years ago. I keep my fingers crossed because I need another one for the little Sport. Yea, I had to break the cover to get mine apart. Which is how I know the plastic covers are still available. The interior plates and hardware are still available, too, I think they said but I didn't check into that. Edward

Very, very rarely I've seen parts show up at the junk yards. But not in quite a few years. I haven't seen anything on eBay for a long time. Even then the stuff went almost as soon as they got it. Rare parts. Edward

Not much you can do about it when the tailgate won't open! lol Just to clarify, what do you mean by "big sport" and "little sport"? Mine is a 98 LS and it has the tire carrier and the dash pod. Does that mean it has the offroad package? And how do I know if it has the locking differential?

My interior plastic cover broke as well. Not much you can do about it when the tailgate won't open! lol[/quote] Yea. The latch inside the gate broke about two years ago so they had to bust out the interior hatch plastic to get the hatch open. Kinda like I had to do to get the gate open. Sucks but there's not much you can do. Sorry. I have own three Sports. Two '97s LSs and a '03 AWD. The two '97s are identical models - both in fact came from the same dealership and were sitting side by side when I bought my first Sport in Jan '98. This is the 'little Sport' (it has an ARB bull bar and All-Pro skids now) ... And this is the 'big Sport' (IPFs are gone now) ... The big Sport is, well, um, big. I don't name my vehicles so they just get identified as the 'big Sport' and 'little Sport'. Don't know what I'm going to do if I ever do a SAS on the little Sport, though. Yes. I can't remember exactly what went with what, but yes, if you have both you definitely have the 'off road package'. Switch on the dash that says L/D. The switch will be on the left side of the steering wheel on the dash to the left of the cluster. There are two switch locations there. One is cruise control and the other is the locking differential. Cruise was installed in the left switch location by the factory. The diff switch was in the right switch location. I don't think the locking diff was ever a dealer install option - too many parts and too much wiring. The option stuff is very fuzzy. There were a lot of changes between the '97 model year and the '99 model year and there were a LOT of changes between the imported from Japan Sports and the built in the US Sports of the same model year. And lots of things were available as a dealer install option AND some things weren't even options and got installed by the dealers anyway. My big Sport came from the factory with cloth seats. The dealership installed the full leather package as well as the front seat heating elements. The keyless/alarm system was installed - I'm told - at the yard in CA when they took it off the boat before it was shipped to CO. I've never been able to confirm this, but I do know that that was how Mitsu did some things so its possible. The trim was installed by the dealership. It came with the Mitsu bumper hitch from the factory, which I had the dealership remove before I took possession. The dealership installed the remote CD changer later in life - but it was still a dealer install option. My little Sport got the LAST dealer install keyless/alarm unit in the US three years ago - and it was installed by the dealership. It came with tinted glass from the factory like my big Sport but the dealership installed the Mitsu tint package - which, BTW, is NOT THE SAME as the tinted windows option. I believe it came with the remote CD changer, but the dealership removed it before initial sale. AFAIKT, it was like playing with Legos. And, yes, some things are not in the owner's manual. Hell, some things are not even in the FSMs. The 5-speed A/T in my '03 doesn't show up anywhere. Edward

Okay, I just went and checked for the locking differential button and it's there! I thought it was the power lock/unlock for the tailgate! It says R/D LOCK and it works! Awesome! The more I learn about the Montero, the more I love it!

The more I learn about the Montero, the more I love it! Dang! Now I'm jealous! Did you're come with leather or cloth? Options were: Remote CD changer - located in the rear passenger side storage compartment. The Infinity sound system with amp - the amp was under the driver side seat Heated mirrors - the side rear view mirrors Leather package - seats, console door, and vinyl door panels instead of cloth Rear window aux antenna - located in the driver side, rear panel glass Several speaker options - 4, 6 and 8 speakers Sun roof Roof rack Rear hatch wind deflector Rear trailer hitch Alarm system, Keyless entry, or Keyless entry & alarm system - these are three completely different systems Edward

It doesn't have the CD changer. I believe it has the single CD in the dash down by the shifter. It doesn't have the Infinity system but it does have 8 speakers, of which only the 2 front door speakers work. But, that's my specialty and when the weather gets nicer I'll start working more on the speakers. I need to find some 6.5" speakers to throw in the doors. I have my old Rockford Fosgate tweeters and JL Audio bi-amp crossovers that I'm going to put in the front doors, but I'm not sure if I'll replace the 4" dash speakers. Then install my 4 channel amp and my highs should sound pretty sweet! I don't think the mirrors are heated, they are power but I don't see a button for heating. It doesn't have the trailer hitch. I don't think it has the aux antenna. It does have the power sliding moon roof. It does have the roof rack. It doesn't have the rear hatch wind deflector. I'm not sure if it had factory alarm or keyless entry. I don't see a security light on the dash and I didn't receive a FOB. It did have an aftermarket alarm as I had to remove an aftermarket siren to get the front left headlight replaced. I have a Viper 2-way remote start I'm going to put on it anyways. The lock cylinder freezes pretty easy so I was actually locked out for a little bit and didn't have lock de-icer and couldn't find my torch so I had to turn the key with plyers, which I've never tried before but the key sticks out far enough that it actually worked pretty well. Definitely want that keyless entry and hopefully it's just the lock cylinder freezing and not the lock itself. Going to put the start on it tomorrow or sunday.

... I was going to say the only option it doesn't have is leather power seats, but looking at your list and there's a few other things it doesn't have or I'm not sure if it had. The Sport never had power seats. Heated seats. Starting in '00 (I think) they had adjustable lumbar support. '00 is when the part number for the seats diverge anyway. Dang. I got interrupted ... Correct. The rear CD changer was an option and so was the CD player in the console. As I understand it, the rear CD changer went away in '00 and was replaced by a 7 disk changer that fit in the original single CD player console spot. I'm a little fuzzy on some of the the '00+ options, but poking around to figure out my '03 ... my '03 has the deck that has a single CD and then it had the console CD changer option. That's cool. Its probably a good thing that it doesn't have the Infinity head. There are some wierdnesses with that head setup I found that kind of make things a pain if you ever change anything. Both of '97s have the 6 speaker system. The stock speakers aren't that bad actually. The 8 speaker system is really nice. I've only seen and heard one of those over the years. They're wired for 8 and I've always wanted to drop the extra 2 in but never got around to it. You're head unit doesn't have 'Infinity' stenciled in tiny letters on the face, does it? That would be extremely unlikely as you have an LS. The heated mirrors was an XLS option. I could have had them installed - in fact the dealership was in the process of starting that when I bought my first '97 - but AFAIK, that was strictly a dealership install option on anything else. I can't remember if it was a switch or if they came on when you turned on the rear window deicer. I THINK it was plumbed into the deicer switch. If I remember correctly, that's how the '00+ systems work. No loss there. The factory hitch looked like something made in someone's back yard. The Hidden Hitch I run is a LOT nicer. That's easy to check. Look at the rear side glass on the driver side. The big panel glass at the very back. The antenna is a wire type that runs around the outside edge of the glass. It looks like the rear window deicer wiring except it runs in a loop around the outside edge. That's too bad if not. THAT is one option I REALLY wish I had. My '03 has it besides the power antenna in the front. It makes a HUGE difference. It is easily added. Easily, but not cheaply. It requires replacing the window with the factory antenna glass. Almost all Sports are pre-wired for all the options. When I pulled the rear floor I found that all the DIN cable for the amp, rear changer and antenna were already there. The dealership techs said that that was normal and that Mitsu did that because it made dealership installation of options very quick and simple. Makes sense. It made installing the CD changer in my big Sport all of an hour job. Pop the pannel, install the CD installion kit and changer and plug it in. Done. Mmmm. I'm not a moon roof fan even though I have one in my '03. I like having the full length ceiling console. Having the factory rack, though, it cool. That makes adding an aftermarket like Garvin very simple and painless. Bummer. I don't have these either and unfortunately you can't buy them anymore. The aerodynamics of the Sport are such that the back window really, REALLY collects the dust if you're on gravel and dirt roads. That deflector does a really good job of keeping the window clear. Roll up the driver and passenger side windows and look for the stickers. Lower rear corner of the glass. There will be a sticker on either or both. If it came from the factory - both. If it was dealer install - it could be both, one or none. Depends on how meticulous the techs were. But, the dealer kit comes with 2. AFAIK, none of the CA yard installs came with less than both, but you know how that goes. The fobs look the same. They're NOT the same internally. I found this out the hard way. I bought a keyless dealer kit and the techs kindly informed me that no, you can not use the fob for the keyless/alarm system. But, its just a rectangle with two, square rubber buttons. Maybe 1 1/4" wide by 1 3/4" long and 3/8" thick. The light came on the alarm systems only, so the keyless had no light. If the dealership installed any alarm, the horn could be anywhere, but the instructions put it behind the passenger side headlight. Since Mitsu's instructions say there, I expect that's where it was installed if a factory install. I THINK the alarm horn has a Mitsu logo somewhere - but don't quote me. Short of having a hole in your dash or a little push-button momentary light that does nothing, I don't know of any way to confirm whether a '97-'99 Sport came with an alarm system or keyless or keyless/alarm. There wouldn't be any obvious parts left over except maybe the alarm horn that would indicate. BTW, for anyone who might care - the dealer install keyless/alarm system is NOT available, but all the individual parts are. Except the key fobs. Additional options I forgot: Child seat retention belts - that hook to the ceiling behind the back seat. Rear locking differential - which you have ARB, BTW, makes a locking diff for both the front and rear Driving lights - not fog lights, driving lights Limited slip rear differential - I THINK this was part of the 'Off Road' package, but was also available seperately Rear passenger seat area heater - independent of the dash front seats Tow package - which included the hitch and trailer wiring Running boards 'Nerf' bars There were two body styles - wide and narrow. The 'wide' style has the big heavy formed body paint scheme painted fender flairs and came with 15"x7" rims and the 265s. The 'narrow' Sports came with no flairs at all or the cheap little black plastic things and 15"x6" rims and something like 235/245s. Narrow, no flares ... Narrow, cheap plastic flares ... Wide, big painted flares (my little '97) ... You can see the difference in rim/tire size between the second black Sport and the third. Edward

It's not Infinity. And yes, factory amplified systems are always a lot more difficult to work with, not to mention more expensive. I do not have a factory amp underneath the drivers seat thankfully, as that is where I plan on installing my 4 channel amp. I did not have to use the low level output RCA harness to install my aftermarket CD player so it's not the amplified system.
And yes, I will agree the two speakers that work do sound smooth. Only the two 6.5" front door speakers work, the door tweeters don't work and just the two 6.5"s sound smooth as far as mids go and the highs are there with a little bit of equalizer tuning. The bass has kind of a high frequency boomyness to it but I have them crossed over to cut the bass out because my subs cover the bass frequencies. But I could go on forever about sound so I'll just stop there, lol.
Yeah, I've torn the interiors out of a LOT of cars and the majority of them are pre-wired for accessories that the car is not equipped with. You don't know how many times I've come across plugs and wires that weren't plugged into anything, and the only thing you can think to yourself when putting stuff back together is "what did I forget to plug back in?" only to find out it wasn't plugged in to begin with.
Browsing pictures, I've noticed differences in the dashes on these Monteros. I've seen some with double-din radio openings, is that a factory CD player below the radio type of setup? Mine has a single-din opening where the radio goes, and the CD player in a separate single-din opening at the bottom of the dash, near the center console in front of the shifters. I don't think they were 2nd generation Sports but they definitely had a different radio opening that looked a TON easier to remove/replace the radio, as it had a removable trim piece around the radio which I'm sure the screws that hold the radio are right underneath.
On mine, it was a pretty exceedingly tedious task to remove the radio as I had to remove the driver side bottom dash panel, remove the cluster/vent dash trim, open the glove box and remove the bottom trim panel from underneath the glove box and remove the trim around the bottom CD player all just to remove the trim panel that covers the radio. It's one of those types of cars that we used to joke was "built around the radio" or in other words have to take everything apart to get to the radio, lol.
I will have to keep an eye on them and see if they defrost with the rear window.
I love having the moon roof, I've never had a car with one of those before. It was stuck frozen at first but it works fine. It also rattles like crazy from the subs (the screws that mount the window to the track were very loose so I tightened them but it still rattles) and the upholstery on the sliding cover is basically gone and hanging down, but other than that I like it. Eventually I will replace the upholstery on the sliding cover.
I JUST noticed that today! I did quite a bit of driving today and the roads were nasty and so is the back window! I'm gonna have to look into getting the rear wiper working properly. I tried it once and it moved but did not stop and it got stuck down on the opposite side. I can spin it 360 degrees manually.
There's a sticker on the passenger window but it's about the factory radio not working if it's stolen. Just a basic (pain in the butt if your battery goes dead) code to make the radio work after it loses constant battery power.
The siren I removed was mounted with self-tapping screws, the same kind we used to install our aftermarket alarm sirens. There's also an aftermarket switch mounted on the bottom driver floor kick panel which is probably the valet switch so I'm almost 100% sure it was an aftermarket alarm/keyless entry install.
I'm not sure if it has the child seat retention belts. It does have a hook loop in the ceiling handle for the rear passengers though, but it's not behind the back seat, it's toward the center pillar between the front and back doors.
It does not have the "driving lights". I do want to install some aftermarket fog lights though, just because I've never had a vehicle with fog lights.
I don't believe the LSD is possible to have combined with the locking rear differential, but I may be wrong. When the locking rear differential is enabled, the ABS light turns on with it, which makes sense because it has to disable ABS on the rear wheels as the ABS cannot control the left/right wheels independently when the axles are locked together. Also, as far as I can tell, in 2-hi the rear tires do not have any kind of traction control/LSD effects and if one tire starts spinning, it spins until it finds grip, and also, the locking rear differential can only be enabled in 4-lo. But in 4-lo, the locking rear differential is awesome! I really want to take it off road so I can put it to use. I made a short video (I will post it) of going up through my yard into the driveway through about 9" of snow and it was literally too easy, but that was before I knew it had the locking rear differential so it was just in 4-lo without the differential locked. Either way, I'm impressed!! It's a big, heavy, offroad, go-anywhere truck disguised as a soccer mom family SUV!
This it DOES have, which I'm not too fond of. It requires coolant lines run to the middle of the car and a separate heater core and blower. The reason I'm not too fond of it is number one, I personally would never use it and number two, it's a ton more parts that can go wrong with the cooling system. It does have a tiny leak that I have not tracked down, but, when my rear left tire would go flat, there would be a tiny puddle of coolant sitting on the flat part of the tire (I made a thread about it because I was so confused), so I assume coolant was dripping from the middle of the car and down the frame to the rim/tire because of the angle it was sitting with a flat tire. I've checked coolant levels and it has a some in the overflow but I added a little more just to be safe. Also there are no puddles under the car which makes me think it's collecting and evaporating somewhere before it leaks to the ground.
It has no tow package.
It does have the running boards, which I do like. They are very truck-like.
Mine has to be the wide style, it has the fender flairs and has the 15x7 and 265 70-r15 tires.
