just noticed it....what year/model was your monty?....noticed that the lift gate & rear bumper was different. first time I saw one like that... It was flat black Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover paint+primer. It's a 98 LS. Long story short, I had to remove the spare tire rack to get the tailgate open. It was rusted and the latch/lock/handle were no longer functioning. I don't have the spare tire and I like the way it looks without the rack better, aside from the stud and bolt holes on the right pillar.

Very nice! Mine is due for the same treatement. I have never mastered using flat paint. I always get it blotchy, same with the high gloss. It never comes out gloss enough to look right. So I have settled on duplicolor satin black. I like the nozzle on the Duplicolor paints. The spray pattern works well with my technique. I have found it to be the closest sheen to the 80s GM black trim finishes. It blends quite well when doing touch ups. It can almost look as if you have used a wipe on shining product, but not so overly wet looking to say I'm fake! My favorite place to use it is on all my vehicles inner fender wells. (judges at car shows note how OEM "new" it always looks.) Key is to get it super clean with dawn and a scrub brush. Stubborn spots get a wire brush. Final cleaning before paint is always a scotch brite pad with dawn. Cuts all the oil and grease prefectly. ON the body... Most dramatic was the civics side mirror. Previous owner had paint overspray on it. Its after picture gives a good idea of the natural sheen from the satin and semi gloss that I love so much. I used that on my 87 firebird t-top rails and well as my 84 Fiero's Sail panels. It did so well I continued on the 84 Fiero's factory black locations (all fieros have black jams, under hood and under rear deck lids black) also its rear window surround, roof channels and under body. Amzing how it cn refresh a car. It realy covered up the abuse from the previous owner. I hope my job on the Sport can improve it as dramatic as yours did!

Nice job guys. Did the window trim on mine a couple years ago. Did put the clear on but never went back and wet sanded, then buff for the mirror finish. Looks better than it did so I'm happy. Looked like it had sunburn with the clear coat peeling.

Edward I do still have it! It's heaaaavy! It's pretty rusted, restoring it is possible but re-mounting might be another story, one of the studs broke and I know at least a couple of the bolts were rusted and broke off inside the pillar. I really do like the sheen of the satin finish you chose! My mind was basically dead set on flat black, but after seeing yours, I wish I'd have given the satin finish more thought!

Yep. Its heavy for a reason. The Sport tire carrier is the only OEM carrier that I know of that you can put a 35" tire and steel rim on for half a million miles and not have it either trash the carrier or rip off the vehicle. There are few of the Sports that came with the rear carrier. It DOES actually make the vehicle more valuable. Blasting it and having it powder coated will take care of the rust problem. Edward

It sucks that more didn't come with that option especially since the only after market option is to have one built for many $$$s. It was nothing but shear luck that the sister to my big Sport showed up here at the office so I ended up with a second Sport with the carrier. I haven't seen more than 3-4 in the last 10 years here in Denver. Edward

Didn't know any of that! I love learning about different vehicles, I didn't know the Sports with the tire racks were more rare or that they were worth more. I didn't see an option for the tire rack on KBB. Sadly, the rear end on mine needs some serious work. Neither the tire rack nor the tailgate handles/latches worked. They were both rusted solid, no chance at all, so I had to remove the tire rack off the truck, remove the inside plastic panel off the tailgate (with the tailgate closed, that was fun), and take apart the latch/handle assembly so the latch could be opened manually with a screw driver from the inside. It kind of sucks having to open it from the inside and not having the interior plastic cover doesn't look the best, but it works for now!
So yeah, it needs the tire rack restored, and a new latch/handle/lock assembly for both the tailgate and the tire rack. Until then, the tailgate needs opened from the inside with a screwdriver.
