Newbie here.
Ive got an 2001 Montero Sport XLS with the 3.0 sohc. Pretty sure it lost a head gasket. Im tearing it apart this weekend. Ive ordered a head set with bolts, timing belt kit ( with the tensioner and pulleys water pump ), also throwing in a new set of lifters / adjusters. Going to take heads to local machine shop to have them checked out. Also going to do plugs and wires while Ive got it torn down that far. Anything else ? Are the lifters ready to install ? Like on the old GM motors they say to let them soak in oil overnight. Is there anything special to install them? Only reason Im thinking about changing them is I have had the lifter tap before loosing the head gasket. I know it could be a cracked head but Im thinking positive. I have coolant in the oil but no oil in coolant. Its also not blowing compression into the cooling system.
Its missing the ac compressor idler pulley assembly. Do I need to order this from dealer or anyone have an after market source ?
Its got 145xxx miles on it. No rust really clean for an 01. I have already converted it to manual lock outs as the auto ones were junk. I also wanted to be able to almost completely disconnect the front end without removing drive shaft. Was an hour job and I have gained around 2 to 4 miles per gallon.
Thanks for the info and help
