I have a '99 MS XLS. I took it to the shop because a caliper broke and when they started it, they broke the kill switch to the left of the steering column. They refused to fix it (that's another story). I have to play with it as I'm turning the key to start the truck. I have a few questions:
1) Is the kill switch stock? 2) Is it easy to disable? 3) If so, how do I do it?
Thank you in advance

I have a few questions: 1) Is the kill switch stock? 2) Is it easy to disable? 3) If so, how do I do it? Thank you in advance I'm sorry, but what?? A 'kill' switch??? I have never seen or heard of or found ANYTHING in the FSMs referencing anything remotely like that. In the US I'm pretty sure wouldn't even be legal for a manufacturer to install something like that. The only 'little red switch' to the left of the column was the LED/momentary switch for the factory alarm(/keyless entry) system and that was a tiny little 3/16" or so LED button switch. It blinked when armed and you could press the 'light' to reset the alarm after it was triggered. SO, either someone completely retarded installed an ignition kill switch for I don't even want to know what reason OR you have the factory alarm(/keyless entry) system and its horked up. You should never have to touch that light unless the alarm was triggered. Take a look under the dash. On top of the steering column see if there's a little black rectangular box about the size of a regular pack of cigarets zip-tied to the column. It'll have a little - probably white - knob and a little red LED + a couple wires running out of it. If you have that, then you have the factory alarm system. It would help if you could post a pic, too. I could tell you for sure if that's a factory part or not. Edward

I don't have an alarm (that I know of), but I'll check it out. It was a solid red button that needs to be pushed in to start the car. My key doesn't look anything like a factory Mitsu key either. I have the feeling some idiot tampered with it before I bought it.

Edward Sorry for the delay. It's been snowing too hard for me to get out there. I snapped some pics. I saw a black box, but it looked like it contained fuses (different than the interior fuse box). I couldn't get a great look because it would involve me ripping the dash apart. I took the red cap off the button and there's an LED in there. That makes me nervous EDIT:

Can you take a better picture of the switch? The box for the alarm system is on the steering column. It is typically zip-tied to the top of the steering column right above your feet. You can't miss it and it doesn't look like a 'fuse box'. Its a little black box with some wires coming out, a nob and a red LED. Your last pic looks like the block off plate and cruse control plug. I assume that you don't have cruse control, correct? The left dash hole is typically where the factory cruise on/off switch sits. If you take the plug off the the plastic plate, there's nothing there, right? The plug just clips into the dash blank? Edward
