Went for an accidental dip in the ocean in my 2001 Montero XLS. Had to get towed. After drying out had to replace a fried fuse box to get running again. Running so-so, but can't drive it , because now the transmission is stuck in failsafe, (reverse is fine, forward in third gear all the time). Help! I already checked just about everything, including replacing the "failsafe relay", located near the ecu. No success! Can the ecu itself be the problem? It controls both , the engine and the transmission. I had just rebuilt the engine prior to this, and it ran great, trans shifted great. Water did not enter engine or trans. Been cleaning lots of corrosion off everything. Anybody have similar experience getting back out of failsafe? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Check input and output position sensors.

I'm thinking ' Risky Business' here, go to local auto parts and see what codes they pull up.
