thinking about replacing the auto transmission on my 2000 montero sport. Wondering how big a job this is? Something I can tackle on my own? Where can I get a Manuel with instructions?

You posted in the Montero section instead of the Montero Sport. I assume you have access to a lift and transmission support?

Just a floor jack. And some ramps to get car off the ground

It is a big job for the DIY. I did mine and is a PITA. Buy a motorcycle jack and adjustable straps to hold tranny to jack. Go to PepBoys, those jacks are cheap there, cost around $ 100.00.

I would Buy a good set of Jackstands instead of car ramps. If you are replacig it with a used transmission I would replae all seals and put a new torque converter in it.
