Well I came across some gold mines and ordered an Australian snorkel, synthetic winch line and a 42" LED light bar. I'm also in cahoots with a local fabrication shop to build a tube bumper tire carrier like one of Eds friends have. Pictures soon to be posted.;D

Awesome! How much was the snorkel? Let me know how the tire carrier goes. I have to do something to get a spare carrier for mine. With the larger tires I have no way to carry a spare as of yet. Can't wait to see how the led bar mounts up. I plan to get one for the sport. Looking for mounting ideas! I would love one that mounts without drilling hole through the roof! Maybe attaches to the pinch welds!

The snorkel was only a little over 200. I have a Carr light bar so the light bar will be mounted on that or the roof rack. The tube tire carrier/bumper should be done within a month. I'm pretty excited about the synthetic winch line too!

What are the benifits of the synthetic over the cable versions? Just starting to scratch the surface on the idea of a winch

WEIGHT!!!! steel cable is significantly heavier than synthetic line. And synthetic line can be handled with light gloves unlike steel frayed line.

Just keep in mind that the synthetic stuff melts. The winch needs to be designed around it. Not all winches are capable of supporting the synthetic cable.

Yes absolutely if you're improperly using the winch. The only reason i say this is because one of the techs where I bought my winch said do you want to buy some synthetic line? I said no. Not for 450 installed. Just for the rope. lol also some of the earlier lines didn't come with a quote unquote "heat shield". Mine did as I double checked. There is a heat shield and an abrasive shield on the outer end. But yes those suckers can melt like butter if that dang drum gets hot.

Good to know! I will have to check into the ability to swap over on my winch set up when that day comes. Buy right the first time...

I think it has more to do with the cheaper stuff. However the winches with the brake in the drum do get very hot. On a hot summer day that would further add to the heat. Not just the melting but the more it is subjected to extreme heat would further lead to its deterioration. Some are not UV resistant either so over time would lead to fatigue.

WEIGHT!!!! steel cable is significantly heavier than synthetic line. And synthetic line can be handled with light gloves unlike steel frayed line. SAFETY first. The steel lines are just plain dangerous. You need heavy leather gloves to handle the cable. Even brand new there will be broken strands. You don't want to be anywhere around if a cable breaks or comes loose under tension. I used mine one trip, took it of and threw it in the dumpster. Weight. BD's right. The synthetic lines are WAY, WAY lighter. What no one mentions is how much of a difference lighter line makes when you're trying to lug it around. The first I used my steel cable was in zero degree weather at 10K ft up in the Rockies in the middle of the winter on a 30 degree incline in 2' of snow. That will ruin your entire day. Flexibility. You would be AMAZED at how strong and the memory of steel cable is at 0 degrees. That stuff comes off the spool like a steel spring and it will NOT uncoil. So, not only are you fighting the weight of the cable, you're also trying to stretch the cable out while its trying to spring back and coil up at the foot of your bumper. Oh, and re-spooling the cable while its all coiled up is such a joy. And try working with it while you're standing on a slippery, inclined surface. That's the best! 99% of the people with a winch use it rarely and then for maybe one or two pulls. For them, there really are no drawbacks to the synthetic line as long as its a good, reputable brand name and not some no-name knock-off crap from China. The only real drawback for synthetic is that its affected by UV. If you have an enclosed winch like the Sport ARB bull bar, the exposure very minimal. On an exposed winch/bumper setup like a Jeep, that would suck. You would definitely need a cover. Anyway, synthetic should be changed out every 5 (or 10) years. I can't remember what the shop guys told me but it was one of those. Some manufacturers are making UV resistant line now, BTW, but I don't remember who. As I said, with the ARB its not that big an issue. If I had to pick two major pieces of recovery gear to NOT be without, my Powertank (CO2 tank) and synthetic winch line would be the two. BTW, be careful what hook you get on the line. The big one that mine came with rusted itself 3/4 closed within about 2-3 years no matter how much WD40 I used or how often. I finally had to cut it off with a grinder a couple months ago. I use this now ... Factor 55 ProLink Loaded Shackle Mount With Titanium Pin & Rubber GuardThe supplied circlip was a POS, but the rest of the product seems to be pretty good. Edward
