Uh, what?!? Half this stuff likes like its for ATVs. I don't know what you're looking at but my straps are all rated at something like 18,000 lbs. 6000 lbs?! You ARE aware that a stock Sport is close to 4500 lbs, right? Most cars are 3500 lbs. If you yank on a 6000 lb rated strap with any force - and you can't avoid doing that - its going to come apart.
3/4" D shackles. NO LESS!!
3/4" D shackles. NO LESS!!
So when you say 18,000 rated.... what do you mean. 18,000lb capacity / working load / break strength / tow capacity... every manufacturer and site lists thing different and I guess I'm plain confused as crap.
The way you talk about your straps versus mine... and what I have learned or gleened from my research... your strap is 18,000lb "rated". if "rated" means the same as mine's "capacity", then yours are break strength of 54,000lbs? But if yours is "rated" like some of the other manufactures, then "rated" means break strength. So that would mean break strength of 18,000lb equaling tow capacity of 6000lb. Identical to my small ones. So what gives!?
The whole thing is due to discrepancy's across manufacture specs and use of terms. rated / capacity / break strength... why are they all used interchangeably, but yet mean different things. There should be a dang standard in place. no wonder folks break crap and get hurt. There is no consistency in descriptions. grrrrr!!!!!! :/
Personally each strap show be "rated" for the vehicles weight. Then break strength should be just that. The manufacture should take into account the possible predicaments the unit could get into... mud, incline, rocks, ruts... and sell a strap with the appropriate "break strength" for that weight (gvwr) rating. So if a 5000lb vehicle could need a strap to deal with it tripling in weight due to an obstacle... the break strength should be over the triple mark with a bit of padding... then your good even in the most dire situations.
Case and point these 3 listings: yes these are snatch straps and a different animal, but I wanted to use a well know name to prove my point.

now info on straps on ARB site....

So which is it. is 17600 the breaking strength or tow capacity. Does "capacity" in ARB's mind mean limit? Capacity in my manufactures mind is the vehicle weight to use said item....
Figure my choices were pretty spot on if I based it on that thinking. based on that thinking, the 9000lb one was overkill as it almost double the sports weight. But according to what ARB's thinking is... mine is a 27,000 capacity! (5x the sports weight) Makes me scratch my head!
Give me some links to appropriate straps as I guess I need to see the specs on the appropriate ones to get a clear grasp. God help me if I want a strap for my dually truck. Do I have to have one with a break strength of 100,000Lbs? where do you buy that? Being sarcastic here... LOL!

or maybe this is right for the sport as its recommended "safe working load" capacity is 20,000lbs. depending on how you look at it, this could be close to your strap. Depends on if the 18,000 is breaking strength or safe working load capacity.
Only putting it out this way to explain my confusion, not to be a smart a$$.
4/5" tree savers.
At least I don't see the word 'chain' anywhere in here.
I'll take a closer look at this tomorrow. Right now it looks kinda scary.
Edward
Are you saying the tree straps have to be 4 to 5 inches wide? All the straps folks show don't look any wider then the recovery straps... ok hang on... ARB tree straps have ZERO specs?
store.arbusa.com/ARB-Tree-Protector-10-Ft-ARB730-P3624.aspx
WTF? What is the capacity and or working load or breaking strength. GRRRRRR
well worst case I will nix it as a tree saver and use it as a bridle only? or will it not work as a bridle?
The 3.25 or 5/8 pin shackles are for small cars that the 4-3/4 or 3/4 pin shackle won't fit on. or for using to drag debris from the road... NOT for the sport to use in its recovery.
Sorry bd did not mean to derail your thread. I guess I should have made a thread on my preparedness separate. Just got excited. I did not know it was going to go sideways. If you want I will post all of this in a separate thread and quote you guys there, then edit to delete my crap. Then you can Edward can do the same? Let me know! But hey maybe my stupidity could help the next guy/gal?!
