Without spinning the driveshaft? Saw in archives it was on the plate on the firewall? If I remember correctly, its on the 'TRANS AXLE' line. Engine: 6G72 Transmission: V5MT1 Axle: 4272 So, the engine is a 3.0L v6 SOHC. That's the 6G72. The 3.5L is a 6G74. The transmission is a 5-speed M/T. That's the V5MT1. The revision would be a '-n'. The M/T in mine is a V5MT1-6. I think the last revision is 7. The axle ratio is 4.272:1. That's interesting. That must be a 2WD or 'Narrow' 4WD. I believe the tallest ratio for the 'Wide' 4WD was 4.6something. Edward

I thought yours was a 10/96 prod. date? So how did you wind up with a revision? And its a 4wd that's for sure The plot thickens...

I thought yours was a 10/96 prod. date? So how did you wind up with a revision? And its a 4wd that's for sure ... The plot thickens... It is. The V5MT1 was made for several years. It replaced the original Montero 5-speed - which was a car transmission with a the heavier truck V5MT1 transmission. They stopped using it in the Montero when they stopped selling it with a M/T, but it continued on in the Sport through '99. The revision denotes changes in the basic V5MT1. There were several changes in syncro design, shaft design and gear design over the years. I think this debuted in the Montero in 1993 or 1994. Don't remember exactly. Where did that image come from? The 'Wide' Sport, has the big formed color matching plastic fender flairs and come with the P265/75R15 tires and wider factory rims. That came with the 4.63 axle gears BECAUSE of the larger tires. The 'Narrow' Sports have either NO flairs at all or thin, small black plastic flairs. They are not color matched to the body. The 'Narrow' never came with the bigger tires and only came with the 4.2 axle gears and the narrow 6" rims. That image is in error: The 4.2 should be 'Without Wide Fender' and the 4.6 should be 'With Wide Fender'. This is according to every FSM I've ever seen and coincides with what I've seen over the years. This doesn't exclude someone changing the gears themselves or having the dealership do it. Edward

So now I'm looking for the wheels (width) and pig (for 4.6) from ones with the fat wheel lips. K Yep. The A/T was the 4.20something, but the M/T was the 4.63. The 'Wide' version is also the one that came with the 7"x15" rims vs the 6"x15" rims. They look identical but the width is different. Edward

Before everyone runs off looking for limited slip diffs ... Unless you can get one w/ the same gears you already have in the front, its going to cost around $250-350 for someone to transfer your existing gears to the new 3rd member. That's JUST for gear setup - that doesn't include removal/install of the 3rd member. So, unless its practically free, look at installing an ARB air locker, unless you REALLY want limited slip for the street. There's a lot more bang for the buck in a locking differential. BTW, you can not cheap out on gear setup. It is either done right the first time or you end up replacing the gears. If someone tells you they'll do it for $20 and a 6-pack - find someone else. Edward
