So we had an unseasonably hot day and I turned on the AC. I had warm air coming out. We have noticed new squeals and squeeks as well. Everything was fine prior to a new ac belt being added. The shop replaced the belts when they fixed their mess up that resulted in my crank pully coming loose. I checked the fan an its running like normal. However i noticed a ton of wiggle in the ac belt when the truck is running... check the video... youtu.be/H-Q-UuaSatAAnd then I noticed the ac was slipping... is it going out or is this due to the loose belt letting it slip? Praying it's the belts fault. Can't afford another issue right now! youtu.be/oXnk9UTnoMQ

I know.... its all good when the owner works on it. He does a superb job. It's when his new hires get their hands on it. I'm about to tell him... he works on it only or I'm finding a new shop!

ok so still not sure if the loose belt is causing the ac not to work right.... I was looking at how to tighten the AC belt myself. I saw this in the DIY... msport97.proboards.com/thread/4338?page=1so if I understand it right I must loosen the nut on the pulley first and then adjust the tensioner tighter? How much do I loosen the pulleys? once good then retighten the pulley nut? How tight is tight enough on the belt?

Just found this thread: msport97.proboards.com/thread/7272/squeaky-ms-thing-problemsaw this... so maybe its just the belt being too loose... your montero has a belt slip monitor and will disable the a/c if the belt slips or compressor starts to lock up. your noise is most likely the belt try using a water spray bottle and spray the belt when the noise occurs if noise goes away the replace the belt if not they try another belt. or the compressor may need oil but they all make a light wirrrh metallic type noise when running. Take if to your dealer they see these more often and can more than likely tell you if its normal. and I saw the belt slipping and smelled the rubber from the slip...

Looks like you're on the right track. I usually loosen the pulley bolt until it just starts to turn easily, adjust my tensioner bolts to where there is a small amount of flex in the belt when pushing on it in with my thumb, then tighten up the pulley bolt. I've also found that the belt tension increases as soon as the pulley is tightened so I leave a little extra room to accommodate for that.
There is a specific amount of stretch listed in the FSM for each belt, but I like to use just enough tension to keep the belts from slipping in order to avoid extra wear on the bearings.

Welcome. Also, I believe the tensioner bolts tighten the belt when turned clockwise because they have reversed threads. At least my alternator tensioner does because I just did it.

the squeaking is an obvious sign that your ac belt is really loose, esp. if you rev the engine......you shoulg have no more than half an inch of play.

Ok... finally got to this today! OMG! The belt was beyond loose... check this out... youtu.be/8jsUsiqNXf8And.... The freaking pully bolt was loose. Like finger tight loose... i backed it out a bit just to be sure its loose enough... i got to work on the tenioner bolt... dear lord it was super loose. Figured a few turns would do it. Nope, I cranked and cranked... finally got it tight. Pushed in only a little per the above guideline. Tightened up the pulley nice and secure. Rechecked the belt. I could twist it just a bit as I remember reading. 1/4 turn if I recall correct... Started it up... a momentary clatter and quiet. So perhaps it was the ac all along, esp considering how loose it was. Can't believe the belt didn't get thrown off. Time will tell if it stays quiet. I turned on the ac and no squeal. I think it was blowing cold... hard to tell though, as it's cold outside...

Well.... sadly the ac was not the clattering at start up. Im betting its the tensioner...
