I had just replaced two O2 sensors and was about to reset the light, when I put my key in th ignition and had not turned it, just then the needle on the speedometer spiked and stayed pegged at 120 mph plus. I thought maybe it was the speed sensor, so I replaced it, but that did not solve the problem.
Any help?
She's my BRAND NEW Mitsubishi Montero Sport with only 187K. She's my only ride and I'm planning to get at lease another 187K out of her.

Hey.... post this instead in the Montero Sport "General" section. That is where the "Sport" folks are. msport97.proboards.com/board/6/generalHave you disconnected the battery to see if the gauge will drop back down? Other thought is maybe it is hung up on something on the gauge face. I have not taken the dash apart that far, but maybe you can and simply touch the needle to coax it back down? I know the Fieros would peg on the temp gauged and then get hung up. You have to physically touch them to get then to drop back after.

My speedometer acted possessed after my coolant and again after my Trans flush where it would randomly go from 0 to 120 then back to 0 even while driving it at 40mph. It settled back to normal almost immediately after. And after about 15 or so total miles both times it stopped and never did it again. The mitsubishi mechanic said it was just the computer resetting itself etc. And not abnormal for a few miles after the battery was disconnected for any length of time. It staying pegged though is abnormal. Maybe as red said when it was resetting itself the needle itself got stuck.

I got the clear cover off and had just touched the needle and it continued back to zero. I buttoned everything back up and the speedometer is working as it should. Thanks for the tip. This was definitely the most cost effective repair I have ever had.
