Using car fax or the like, has anyone been able to locate the name & contact number of the prior owner of your used montero (or any car for that matter?) I would like to ask the prior owner if they changed the timing belt. I know its just a shotin the dark, but it might save me $1000. If they lie to me then, well, it will cost me more. Ill have to just wait & hear how they tell me..
As i understand it:Other than contacting the owner, one can only learn if a timing belt was replaced if the mechanic or dealer repair is listed on the car fax. i did that on another car.Sometimes you can call and they might look it up for you. Not all mechanics are required to report repairs so some do some dont.

If it was done at a dealership I think they report it to car fax, and or may have it in a database based off your VIN. Not 100% sure though.

On another car the carfax had the dealer listed. i called them and they gave mw whatever was done, which wasnt much, suprisingly. The one I bought I never checked the fax. Seems like those with higher mileages requiring a belt change dont get done at dealers. Hit or miss records on cars ive carfaxed. 6 or so. not really eenough to draw any generalized conclusions, but i still do.

What happen to the good ole days when you could call dmv with the license plate and get its address and if i recall the name? This was here in kaliforistan in the 60s as i recall. that would be soooo dangerous today. it probablly was then, but we never heard about it.

When I was out there striping at the various dealerships I had to sign papers concerning privacy
