yes I have a heat shield over mine. You can't see the entire manifold just the portion that mounts to the engine. although I could see around the shield to identify the crack.

Byrdman,
I removed my heat shield to take the photos. Like others have mentioned here, you can really tell if you have a crack by the sound, especially when it's cold. Over time, the crack widens and hot or cold, you can hear the exhaust leak at the manifold. Three bolts, and the shield is off and you can confirm your suspicions.
BTW, I had my manifold replaced last week. It cost about $450.00 total at the dealer in L.A. My SRS light has remained off since then so the crack may have been contributing to the pre-cat malfunction code. My fingers are still crossed though. Replacing the pre-cats is about $1200.00.

Got it, I'm asking because if the shields are not present, thermal shock is one known way to cause the crack. Especially if you drop water on the manifold... $450 is a real buzz killer... trying to find a pattern - especially curious if most/all are CA emissions.

I got Monty back from the dealer. I asked for the old manifold. It was cracked between the 2nd and 3rd port, mostly all the way around. I can't tell where the crack initiated from. I will have a fracture mechanices guy look at it when he gets back from vacation. The service rep. thought that they were rather rare. Manifolds are exposed to extreme temperature changes in short periods of time. The crack is generally caused by thermal fatique failure. Inherent stress combined with a low cycle of thermal heating and cooling.

manifold is still cracked... Is there anything that you could seal up the crack with? and would welding it back together hold? Don't want to buy one if I can help it...

You cannot weld cast iron.

It sounds like someone moved your exhaust pipe into the engine bay.

Exactly what mine looked like. Tried a patch before buying the replacement. Failed miserably. Bought an aftermarket manifold for around $75. Seems to be working fine, but not an quick replacement. Easier than the drivers side from what I hear tho!

Old thread but still an issue. I'm on my third passenger side exhaust manifold. Cracked in the same location every time. Grr. California config.

Have you checked to make sure that the head flange is true, both on the manifold you're installing and on the head itself? Can you do me a favor and take some GOOD high res close up pics of the manifold and cracked area? Edward
