Joel,
What is your feeling on replacing the cam and crank seals? At what mileage would you add that task to the timing belt job? How often have you seen leaky seals?

Had my 60K service done this past WED at Suncoast Mitsubishi in Port Richey, FL. The cost of it plus a timing belt replacement combined was $750 before taxes and "shop supplies." Funny how those "shop supplies" ended up equalling my $20 coupon to the dollar. I did not do the water pump because a) they said it looked "pretty good" and b) I have a 100K warranty that covers the water pump and only has a $25 deductible. For the record, the water pump alone was going to cost me somewhere around $180 just for the part. About the only thing that was not included in the 60K service was a new fuel filter - they wanted to charge me like $69 to do it and another $250 to do my front brakes. NO THANK YOU! I'm hopefully having my wife's uncle take care of both of those items tomorrow for A LOT cheaper.

The noisy belts are probably your alternator belt, and/or AC belt, etc. Not the timing belt. They can be replaced pretty cheaply.

So speaking of timing belt replacement, what is the general consenus here that when you get close to 60000miles and want to break the required service over a two month period to reduce the financial hit, what would you have the dealer do during each month. Certainly I'd want the water pump done at the same time at the timing belt. Any thoughts guys?

The local Mits dealer sent me a flyer saying they would do relace the timing belt for $399.00. Why would they discount a timing belt job from $650 -$700?
Look forward to you comments.

These are just "teaser" quotes. This is a common strategy of all manufacturers just to get you inside their doors. Surely you can have it done at that price if it applies to the Sport (read the fine print about trucks and V6's). If it does apply, it's is likely to be an ala carte service. ONly the timing belt is replaced and nothing else.

Hi, I just took our 2000 sport (3.0) 4wd in for full transmission service, timing belt and water pump, rear cam o-rings, and full tune-up. The price for all of this was $1100. I thought this was a pretty good price for the whole package what do you guys think? Either way to me it was worth the price for peace of mind!!!

Not too bad, considering it should get you another 60-90k miles.

I went the non-dealer route and had my timing belt and all three external belts replaced for a grand total of $495. I have used the same mechanic for work on other vehicles, so have no worries at all.
On the question of when to do the timing belt, that was tossed about awhile back on another thread, I was at 75,000 miles and he said the belt was looking pretty bad. Glad I didn't wait!

i just paid 315 in labor "shop: allens allignment and garage in byron georgia" install t-belt , tbelt componet kit, tbelt hydrolic tensioner and water pump i got the t-belt free from a friend and paid 100 for the waterpump and componet kit "advance auto parts "also paid around 50 for the tensioner " bumper to bumper warehouse macon georgia" " this tensioner runs 70-120 at napa, orileys, auto zone advance " so a total of $465 for a tbelt and waterpump and tentioner and pulley and belt replacement and instalation all new parts. the tensioners and pulleys are something that should be a must when doing the t belt install. My water pump had 110k miles on it and i ran about 80-85% streight water ever spirg to fall since about 60k and the pump shows no signs of rust are anythang and looks in good shape so i will keep it for a back up. im going to bring up a new topic on the water pump. dose it need replacement ever tbelt install i mean its a tiny water pump and what is the reasson for replaceing these thangs? what can fail other than a wore down rusty blade. can the shaft break or is there any other internal water pump parrts?
wow lol i brought up a very old thread

I waited WAY TOO LONG to have my belt replaced. Mine was at 100,000 miles when I did mine. I went to Goodyear down the street from me and the total cost was about $700.00 with the waterpump and a bunch of other misc items that I had done.
I took a good look at the old belt and it looked pretty good. I wouldn't want to risk snapping it and losing the motor though. In hindsight I would change it out much earlier.

yo mctweety did you replace the cam hyrdrolic asymbly? my install consist of the t belt a tbelt componet kit that inlcuded a ideler and tensioner pulley and said in the descripition that it did not include the cam hydrolic tensioner and so i also bought a cam hydrolic tenisioner priced around 60 . now im not sure if this hydrolic tensioner is a part that is reconmended to be replace along with everythang else on a tbelt install the mechanic thought it be a good idea to get a new one. Please everyone give me feedback on if this is a replacement part that should be done every tbelt install.
As far as belt wear my monty had the tbelt change at 105k the belt looked good but close inspection showed micro sized dryrot like cracks so i guess it was good to replace. im told the ideler and tensioner pulleys in the componet kit are a must for reliabilty and the water pump looked like it was still in great shape. the hydrolic cam tensioner adjuster was replaced the old one is hard to tell if it was wore or not. I could not push the adjuster in for my life thou so what ever you do dont pull out the pin in the new one before you install it lol. hope to here back from you guys on the cam hydrolic tentioner and if it is something that most are replaceing.
