I'm wondering if the fipk from gt 3000 will work for 2001 3.5 xs it's cost and if not what will? Also what would be the best way to go for exhaust with that or any other intake. I read abouty a custom cat back with 2, 2 1/4 pipes and flomaster muffler but dont know if it would be any better power and cost wise.I am looking to pick up some power and gas mileage Please, could someone give me some ideas. Thanks, Clay

The KN FIPK for the 3kGT will work on the MOntero Sport... you may need to fabricate a mounting braket for it. IN fact, ALL Mitsubishi's uses the same rectangular shaped Mass Air Sensor so basically any aftermarket hiflow air cleaner designed for a late model Mits should work. As far as exhaust...do not go too big in diameter- perhapst the next size up will be fine. I'd recommend an Flowmaster 50 SUV Series...throaty, yet mellow. Not intrusive at all from inside and out! Don't waste your time with the HKS Catback- too expensive for what you get. A reputable shop can mandrel bend the same setup for 1/3 the price...plus the Flowmaster sounds MUCH better! Click on my Sound Domain link to see my intake setup.
When fabricating a mounting bracket for your FIPK, be sure to allow for some movement from the engine as the engine rocks back and forth when under load.

Can I use the same KN FIPK (PN 57-1500-1) on my new 2003 Montero Sport Limited?

Het Joel, Thanks for the advice, but I have another question. My spotr has 2 cat's and 4 O2 sensors so if I went with the flowmaster muffler should I run a 2.25 pipe from the cat back which would require a O2 mod, or from the bolt up oe the resignator back, eliminating the res and the muffler but not having to mess with the O2 mod, or go from the resignator back and just replace the stock muffler and pipe. Thanks again, cwic

You actually have 3 catalytic converters on your truck. 2 of them (warm up catalysts) are directly after the exhaust manifold (each monitored by one O2 sensor before, and one sensor after it)...the exhaust system joins into one pipe directly after the two warm up Catalysts and flows into one main Catalyst. There is NO O2 SENSOR MONITORING THIS CAT so if you were to install a cat back system, no modifications should be neccesary. Some other states that do not have an emissions testing program, do not have the two warm up Catalysts as explained above. Rather, they use the one main Catalyst which has an O2 sensor before and after it. If your exhaust system is set up this way, you can still install a Cat back system, buy you'll need to be sure that there is a port in the pipe where you can install the O2 sensor. Any reputable exhaust shop can perform this task easily.

hey joel thanks again for the advice. Its amazing how many people work on cars or sell parts online or for a dealership and have no idea what they are talking about. makes me wish I knew how to work on my truck myself. No wonder my sisters 20 yr old boyfriend looked at me stupid when I said something about a resignatator. haven been able to find anyone to do the pipe bend or muffler install for a decent price so I may end up going with the hks and doing it myself, but thanks for the education and thank you moderator for this site. clay

You'll probably end up spending more that double you money if you purchase the HKS unit. Midas, Meineke, or any muffler shop should be able to mandrel bent the pipe diameter of your choice and run it through a Flowmaster 50 Series SUV muffler for under 2 bills. The HKS unit will cost your left and part of your right leg!

Overlander(see "LINKS") has the HKS catback system on sale during March, for about $360.00.
