Sorry abouot that, just got trigger happy.
Got me a used Yamaha R1 friday. It's a 2002 model, liquid silver in color and have 11K miles on it. I got it from a bike dealer here in San Diego and paid 8g out the door. The dealer put in brand new rear tires and conducted maintenance and the last (first) owner already had it somewhat tricked out. It's got akrophobic full exhaust, frame sliders, smoke wind shield and undertail. I know the KBB value is 7,700 but with tax and everything the dealer gave it to me for 8K. Really want the new 2004 R1 but they want 13500 for it. This is my first bike so I'm really excited. I think the dealer gave me a good deal but what do you guys think? For all the bikers out there, let me know your input.

jesus dude, 1st bike is a R1 ? ive got some advice that i hope you heed! #1 buy the best helmet you can POSSIBLY afford. find $300-500 and get a shoei or arai. DO NOT ride in a $100 POS helmet! its your head damnit! #2 leather: wear leather (or newer hi-tech ballistic) jacket AT ALL TIMES. rash aint pretty! also gloves and boots. buy PROTECTIVE gear, not pretty boy poser junk. #3 MOST IMPORTANTLY: find and take a MSF (m-cycle safety foundation) beginner rider safety course. its given in every state, and is free in some. google MSF or just ask your dealer. #4 NEVER, EVER, EVER drink and ride. ive been riding sportbikes for about 10 years. i currently ride a VFR. your R1 is a demanding piece of equipment, and a respect of its speed potential will be good for your hide. i DONT mean to be preachy, and am probably not telling you anything that your common sense doesnt know, but i just hope you exercise some restraint with your right wrist until you get some miles under your belt. have fun, but BE CAREFULL !!! PS- that liquid silver looks great!

ABNER-----thanks a million for all the advice, Bro.
The dealer, when he went through the bike with me got a little suspiscious when I was all ears while he was talking. He asked me if it is my 1st bike and told him yes, his eyes got wide and told me I'm crazy for getting an R1 for my 1st bike. I also told him that I don't have a license and I don't know how to ride, Yet, so they would have to deliver the bike. He just laughed at me and gave me the same advice you did. My buddies are all bikers (gsx 600, TL1, 954, RC-51, 02 hayabusa) so they are also giving me advices. I listen to all of them, however simple it may be coz I know that I'm venturing to a world that is alien to me. You guys have the all the experience and it would be to my benefit to soak in everything that you guys have to say. And by the way, I did get a good helmet (Arai). My buddy looked at it and he told me that it's the top of the line. The dealer slashed down the price for me.
Thanks again.

al, glad to see youre off to a good start. i REALLY suggest the MSF course. its time/$ well spent. there is really nothing wrong with the R1 as a 1st bike if you use common sense. as a matter of fact, it will make you feel almost invinceable (sp?). it has enough motor and brake to get you away from trouble, but the REAL key is avoiding those situations before they arise. that is one of the main subjects of the MSF course. its called "situational awareness", and its the 1st and biggest step to safely sharing the road with all the cages. NOW GET READY FOR SOME FUN !! you WILL have more fun on the bike than youve ever had on 4 wheels. you will look forward to those sun AM rides, and a great release from the everyday normal 4 wheeled world. sounds like the bike is ready to go: fresh service, new skins, kick-a$$ pipe, and other goodies. its all good! and that silver/black is one of the best looking bikes on the road. JACKET- i like leather, but the new ballistic nylons offer the best of both worlds: protection and ventilation. youre in SD, so they may fit your weather/temp better. try at the shop, and tons are available on ebay at substantial savings. links to all the mail order shops are in the ads in the bike mags also. have fun, be safe, and keep us updated.

ABNER - Rode the bike for the 1st time. It was a lot of fun but at the same time scary. I went around my neighborhood with my buddies and they said I did good for a first timer . By the way, thanks for the pointer on what kind of material to get for a jacket. Next on my list is to get the MSC. I don't really have a choice since the military is mandating all their bikers to take it. The beauty of it is since it's mandatory, the military has it's own school taught by military and civilian instructors combined and it's free. Just need to sign up for that class and it's all good. ABNER - thanks for asking. Yes, I already took the MSC and now is a licensed biker. I've been driving my bike every where I go, atsamatter of fact, my eclipse is just collecting dust outside. I've been riding with my buddies in the canyons and I'm about to go with them next week to this place called Palomar canyons. They said most of the more experienced (and crazy) riders go there. When you get a chance check out www.palomarpics.net I know I'm still a newbie so I'm really taking it slow. It's just sometimes, the power in between your legs get into your head and you wanna flex it a little. AL
