I am looking for a way to get better performance when I haul stuff, climb steep hills in the mountains, and acceleration. Basically giving more muscle would be great.
I have a MS LS 2WD '01

I would recommend an air intake and exhaust system. I have an air intake and I notice a little more juice in my MS.
If anyone has any other ideas as well.....I want to know.

A set of headers would be an obvious choice to take advantage of the intake and exhaust. But there aren't any made in the U.S. Myself and some other guys on the forum are interested in getting a set, but it seems that the only place that makes them is in Australia. RPW is the company. There's another company in Australia(CAPA), that makes supercharger kits for Pajeros. The Pajero is the name they use for the full size Montero. Not smog legal in the U.S., so if your truck has to pass emissions, it may not. I would like to supercharge my wifes truck, but I have to keep it "green". Guess I'll just keep on waiting!

( I am not affliliated with any of the brand names mentioned here, nor do I recieve any type of compensation from or through them.) It all depends on how much you want to spend. You could start your mods by a computer chip, performance spark plugs and wires, custom intake(which in discourage anything besides homemade), or you could invest in a fuel-saving device such as the Tornado(although I have not used it yet), maybe even just switching to a better fuel. I only put Mobil or chevron fuel in mine, although i do use the lowest priced unless I am wheeling or towing. Those are probably the cheapest mods(I think I covered most all of them..) If you really want nothing but performance out of it, then my first investment would be to have the intake professionally ported and polished. Next would be to have a turbo charger or supercharger installed(not both!). For street performance, a supercharger would probably work best, as a turbo is just for a smaller boost with everyday driving. Make sure you find out exactly how much HP it takes to drive the Supercharger, because some promise 100-300 more HP, at the cost of nearly all you were factory given. The best superchargers for standard performance(not racing) are those that require up to 50HP, but NO more. Turbo's, no matter how well they are built, still have LAG. LAG is when the exhaust is drving the turbo, but not enough of exhaust is generated to created a higher P.S.I. in the intake/chamber. There are a few other downsides to turbo's, so if you are interested in this, let me know. You can expect anywhere from 50HP more to 125 HP more at the flywheel, maybe max at 105 at the rear axle. All the supercharger (or turbo) does is cramp as much air into the chamber as possible before the valves close and the piston starts its journey back up to compress the air/gas mixture. This increases your compression, but also increases the amount of oxygen (O2) in the chamber mixture. Oxygen is what burns the fuel, the compression is just there to build up pressure so when the mixture does explode, it can develop more power to push the piston back down, turning the crankshaft which turns the tranny, which turns the driveline to the rear axle. Now, if you are the real hybrid type, I've also had a friend that was so crazed about HP that he installed an oxygen injector into the current fuel injector on his 98 Chevy Suburban. The immediate result was about double the HP he had before plus a broken rear driveline. After he fixed the driveline, and engaged the 4wd to split the power, again he had roughly twice the HP he once did, but at what cost. He had to carry the added weight of the 110lb oxygen tank along with the cost of filling/refilling it. Oxygen is not cheap by anyone's means to refill. Roughly a week later when he was trying to race a supercharged suburban, he blew six of the eight pistons right through the side of the motor. The other two grenaded inside the motor. So thats pretty extreme just for some added HP. If you have any questions, email me at my address on my profile. Also, I don't mind answering the question, but instead of asking it on off-roading, next time please go to street mods, because I don't see much off road time for your ES model, although with four grand, we can dump a transfer case and a solid axle up front if you want join us! he he Have a good day and keep flying!

Just as a matter of clarification. If I am correct, because your '01 beast is 2wd, makes you an ES model. LS is only 4wd. Both models of ES and LS are equipped with the same interior and options, minus the 4wd. Thats all. Keep Flying!

that is incorrect. All models come with the option of of 2wd and 4wd.

Well, it looks to me like we have a standoff here. You are right to a fault. The 2001 montero sport ES is available with the 4wd. Please note that I was right as well. The 2001 is the first year that you can get the 4wd in the ES model. The 2000 ES model is strictly 2wd, and because there was no years mentioned, we are both right. However, the initial question that was asked was about and ES 2wd. So you comment was unnecessary and unaccurate as well. Please make sure you don't question others without [glow=red,2,300]properly[/glow] doing comprehensive review on it [glow=red,2,300]FIRST![/glow].

I've heard that the Tornado won't help with fuel injected engines but does with carbuerated engines, don't know.
As for the horsepower gains posted by AirForce, there is no way to see much more than a 75-125hp increase on our engine with a turbo or supercharger without building a full race motor first. Now you can get 250-300 or more horsepower by bolting on a supercharger to an almost stock bigblock v8 but not our small v6.
"For street performance, a supercharger would probably work best, as a turbo is just for a smaller boost with everyday driving."
What? A turbo can make insane amounts of boost and isn't as good for everyday driving as a supercharger. You need to hit about 3000rpms before it even spools up (there are many different turbos so my rpm estimate is just an average) so half the time the turbo isn't even working. With a supercharger the engine turns it via a belt so you get boost at all rpms.

I believe the idea behind the Tornado, I just haven't bought or tested it yet, so ditto to what you said. However, here is the simple truth..
[glow=red,2,300]Turbos are running,[/glow] at ALL RPM's (at and above idle). They just aren't noticed. My challenge to you is..Start a COLD motor with a turbo.(any engine will do, diesel or gas, doesn't matter what size) Put your hand on the induction air(NOT THE EXHAUST HALF OF IT) side and let the motor idle. Not only will you feel it get colder, but rev the motor slightly past idle and you will feel a small virbration get more noticable. Thats the blades spinning. I do agree that the Supercharger does spin reguardless, but it doesn't give boost until 1900 rpm anyway. @1900 or more RPM, the turbo will have already provided boost BEYOND what the supercharger will(depending on the pitch of the impellers), at that RPM. Powerwise, this is for everyday street driving..NOT like something that is always connected to it, and LAGS at idle. I'm not an idiot. I've worked on turbos for years and I would buy one hands down over a super anyday. Turbo's also take less of the engines HP to provide the HP boost, so the lag is usually not noticable, unless you are running an overdrive tanny. Want more Power than a turbo can provide? Stack two or four on there..(Twin Turbo, Quad Turbo...sound familiar? They do it for a reason...) You will find that on a properly tuned engine(reguardless of size) the turbo's will keep the engines HP there better, then add what they are tuned for. You are talking about the old turbos that the mercedes started in with on their diesel motors.. I'm talking about a Turbo designed for a cummins M-11 diesel and the C-12 and C-15 Caterpilliar engines. I have over $5 grand in stocks with both of those companies for a reason.. So Why don't they supercharge those applications if Supers provide so much more power for the torque and weight? Its because they are two totally different applications. Supers really are meant for something that is Nitiride driven, and WON'T be used for extended periods of time(standard commuting for example). Supers wear out fast..Everyday driving would not be an economical use of them by any means. Getting back to it, We aren't a forum for commercial use. All he wanted was a little more power, and for that matter, I don't even see a turbo as being little enough for his question. Be a little more couteous, and don't make the mistake another gentleman did by not doing indepth research on the subject first, not just by what you know. I called up both Cummins Inc. and Caterpilliar Inc. before I replied to your ravings..what did you do?

???I've try the Tornado and the K&N filter give you a better boost. Tornado burns more gas and I'll keep the K&N filter. The tornado is setting on the self for now.

Are you an idiot? If you look at my last post I was trying to move on. I posted a link to those sites for everyones benefit to educate them on turbochargers. You are the one thats being the jerk and bringing this site down.

Okay, lets take this back to the begining. I know you saw/read the article boricua83 and I were sorting out about the 2wd issue. He was stating that the ES models, were always available either 2 or 4wd. I proved him wrong, and I'm sure he took it as a lesson to do a comprehensive review FIRST. I even put a glow around it in different colors. I have done more than look it up online, but I spoke with my two companies on the subject, and they both agree with me(not because I have stock there either) that a supercharger is NOT for everyday use..Its for Racing.. The guy wanted an everyday use..Headers, wires stuff like that.. A turbo was better, but probably still out of his league(it is for most of us). Don't get all offensive just cuz a super in your eyes is your idea of an everyday thing.. the plain and simple truth is, it isn't! Leave it alone for crying out loud..the his question has been more than answered..end of story, end of article, end of thread!
