as far as the tornado, there was someone on here who had dyno'd a car with and without a tornado and it gave them something like 3hp at low rpm's with a 7hp loss at the high rpms. Dont get 1, they're junk. Clay

I figured the toronado was junk. No hard feelings AirForce.

I think the best thing to do is just invest in a good exhaust and intake system( injen looks like the only one). Hopefully more an more companies will someday make more performance parts for the MS. I personally thought about adding one of those fuel line magnets, tornadoes, chips- etc. Then, thanks to largely this site, I didn't waste the change. I have also learned that changing out your tranny/ front and rear- end axle fluids not only improves gas mileage, but can give you noticed performance improvement. ( not necessarily more power- just quicker due to less resistance)

I only have one bad thing to say about the injen intake is that it sucks hot air.. DON"T do this guys.. IF you do get(or have) an injen already, do what Cwic did and get the intake to the front via a hole cut in the radiator mounting wall. (I'm not sure how to do this with an injen, but you guys can figure it out I'm sure.) Hot air kills HP and mileage, so if you are expecting more Low-speed torque, forget it. All you are sucking in is underhood temp air. This is MUCH worse than the stock setup was... If you live in arrid regions where its hot anyway and you don't think it matters, trust me. Desert temps @40+ mph are much lower than whats under your hood, reguardless! ALso, with a front(Ram air or similar setup, even sitting idling you'd still be sucking in cooler air than an injen could ever promise. The motor heats up when its idling because the air isn't flowing through the radiator barely at all, even if it does have an electric fan(2000 models and up I think), you're still sucking underhood hot air. Cold Air People.. Cold Air. Thats the key. Getting good airflow is only half the challenge, getting great airflow that is ten or twenty+ degrees lower is going to do wonders. But if you want to go ahead and try it. You'll see.. I stuck a cheap auto inside/outside time electronic thermometer in my stock intake entrance before I modified the setup. I came to 95 degrees(its 81-85 degrees on guam), while driving an average of 35-40mph, and this was the COOLEST It ran. With the custom intake design I have, I am sucking in 76 degree air straight to the stock filter box.. I took off almost 20 degrees because I went to the front for air! Just imagine what you could do if you modified the injen to the front. You'd get more HP, Mileage and cooler temps than I can with my ABS pipe setup! I just paid about one tenth the price you did(low-ranking still and I'm paying for a wedding..gimme a break!) I'm not dissing the injen, but for gosh sakes the manufacturer should've seen that problem coming. They only marketed it because its so easy to install and it gets more airflow, creating better HP. If they would have finished the job, you wouldn't be sucking hot air, and I wouldn't be writing this about the injen. I would be recommending the injen and dissing another product that fell short of the HP, mileage and Temperature improvements. So give that a think and lemme know what your thoughts are on it..

. Thanks. I had no real plans on buying the injen myself, because it does look like it just sucks up the hot engine compartment air. The key to an intake system, in my opinion, it to suck up cold air like you said. How much different is your set up than stock in terms of performance?

How much does the flowmaster really add to the MS? Does anyone have it. I love the throuty sound, just wondering if it's worthwhile. Thanks

Wow,
tough website. I thought Joel was the genius, but he just doesn't rub it in our faces when we are wrong.
I have an 02' XLS with AWD and don't know jack about it except that I stick the key in and it starts.. I shift gears and it moves. When that doesn't happen I come here to ask "stupid questions" without being criticized for my stupidity!!
Thanks Joel for being my hero when I need you!! Loren

After reading parts of this thread I gotta agree with HawkeyeSport. Until I read certain.. uhemm! (clearing my throat) comments, I didn't know it was possible for a person to type before thinking. Anyhow, back to the issue of performance, a lot of what was suggested contradicts Joel's advice, and though he isn't God, he's probably at least an incarnation of some enlightened Diamond Star Guru. Well, maybe not that either, but the point is he knows his $hit. Other than skipping meals to buya supercharger, it seems like the only way to increase power is to upgrade the plumbing front to back. K&N (ram prob would be best) to injen (or home depot equivalent), maybe clean/polish throttle body? (that one came out of my ***), to headers (good luck/custom), to high flow cat, to cat back mandrel bent 2.25 (unless you do get supercharge then prob 2.5-3) to flowmaster or whatever flavor muffler you want that flows. Don't forget synthetics in motor and gears. Oh, and you could always take out the AC, power stearing, ::)spare tire, those worthless seats, airbags and seat belts, windshield and windows; all that crap bogs down your engine. Just take body off and straddle tranny like a man! ;D

In performance terms, I've noticed more "back in the seat" feel but really the most gains are in the gas mileage. Definitely fix or kick the injen..its not worth it.. I still am somewhat skeptical on the tornado, but I'll just have to try it one day when I can afford it. Flowmasters are alright, and if you want the throaty sound, definitely the muffler for you. But, consider this, if you don't care about sound limits, the bigger the muffler size(those that are NOT stock and ARE designed for bigger sized engines) are gonna give you more HP than a muffler designed for your motor. The reason is simple, resonance. This is what makes the muffler so loud, is the exhaust pounding the sides of the muffler and if there is more to bang around, more sound comes. The size also creates little, if any back pressure. For those that believe in back pressure, all the power to ya, but I personally would run pure chopped headers(and nothing else, not even pipe) for the most HP and fuel mileage if it were legal( and not deafening) to do so. ;D Now, on to the idiot thing.. If you are going to challenge one of my articles with anything, please research it PROPERLY. Use your phone, internet, even talk to the engineers who originally designed the part themselves.. Do your homework first! I won't make fun of anyone if they are struggling with a problem, even if it means they are trying to turn the ignition key backward to start the vehicle...Thats what we are ALL here for, to provide the best possible (and accurate) information, specs and procedures for anyone who is stuggling with it. Although a lot of help can be acquired by this site, some problems involve a bit more investigation, then if you are still having problems, let us know. Also, a big thing is safety. If something you feel is unsafe, let us know so that we can all investigate it and if need be, report it to the manufacturer as a possible defect, so it can save lives. Its about all of us uniting under the common flag, we have have some type and year of montero. May all of you get the best HP and mileage ever when you drive again. Oh, and if you screw up your body(on the montero) so bad that you can't keep it on.. Screw it, tear it off and ride it like a man!! Just don't forget pictures now!

Amen.. Keep flying and I hope you have a safe trip to Germany..
Just remember that emails don't have a way to show emotion and people calling each other jerks on here is not what this site is about. I would guess 80% of us are in desperate need of "positive" advice.. If you go back and read all the posts and not look at the names of those posting, maybe I would even think I was a jerk. Sometimes looking in the mirror hurts. Unless your ripped like Joel is. Heck I'm starting to not like him... jk. Loren
