Good luck CerOf. He has ripped just about everyone on this board. He reminds me of myself when I was about 3 years old and knew everything and spoke before thinking. Maybe he will outgrow this as well. But it is tough to have someone belittle you for stating an opinion. Peace....

I looked at both cars before I bought my shogun sport the jeep had a 2.5 diesel engine and the shogun sport (montero) had a 2.5 turbo diesel engine. in the end I went for the Montero because my wheel chair fited in
I love this car and think I made the right choice

I'm SUPER jealous that you have a turbo diesel, or a diesel engine option.
I'd KILL to havfe either the Cherokee or Montero Sport with a diesel.
(A cherokee here in the US should not be confused with the Jeep Liberty that is called a "cherokee" over seas)

Yeah, no kidding... jail time would be worth the turbo diesel.
Hey puddy, can you give any engine designation / engine specs you might have on your new chariot??

I'm a lil late on this....CerOf knows me from Jeeps unlimited methinks... I had a VERY built '99 XJ that I just sold last January...I also have an '03 Sport. The Sport will be getting a nice Old Man Emu Setup very soon because the ride is a little too "uncontrolled" with the stock stuff. The killer on the Mitsu is the IFS hands down. If you wheel hard IFS is as terrible as folks say. The Unibody on the XJ is tough as nails... The biggest issue with the XJ is you will need a solid 3" of lift to run 31's...4.5 if you want to really wheel. In the above pics those are 32x9.5 TSL's with about 5" of lift. The Jeep suspension geometry hates lifts over 4"...even with longer control arms and Track bars, the ride is terrible. Now would I wheel the Mitsu like this? no. Though body-on-frame is nice, I don't think you can really overcome the IFS without lockers front and rear...and even then you'll really start getting into body damage territory. Now the Montero is on 30x9.5 BFG's...it's the ultimate snowmobile Once the lift is on we'll go to 32x11.5's. Of course now the XJ is gone (moved back to the world of Rovers ) In closing, if you're going to wheel the rig often (not once a month in a field) and hard...get something else entirely LOL...a late 80's early 90's Range rover gives the ride and security of a Montero while whoopin on the XJ wheeling RJ RJ

Montero's are simular to 4runners. With an axle swap front and rear, a Montero could wheel better (and hold up better)than a stock cherokee without a doubt. Because of the limited aftermarket gearing & locker avaliablity for the Montero, this would be the best option. Running coils on all four corners and linking them would give the best articulation. I plan on doing this in the future while keeping it as my daily driver. I'm not sure if i'll run dana 60's or 44's. There are so many options these days, it makes it hard to chose sometimes.

So if you swap your front and rear axles and do a solid axle swap up front you could out wheel a stock XJ? Maybe. Maybe not. The stock XJ front suspension is inherantly flexy...a custom setup might or might not work the first few times around (we've done quite a few custom SAS conversions).
I completely understand why youd want to do the SAS though...dependind on tire size I'd think D44's would suffice (not a ton of HP in either of the montero's V6's and the D60 will eat quite a bit of clearance...)

i all honesty guys, lets face it, all new trucks from any manufacturer are all designed for 150k+ miles. reliability is a given now it has to be or no trucks would sell. in my area we have sand lots of it. so my ms performs so much better and smoother than my cherokee ever thought it isn't even funny. as cer0f put it there are trade offs. When i go to colorado i park the ms and climb in a jeep. it boils down to the front axle, and gearing options.
