Your gears are now to high, you will need to change your gear ratio to 4:10 or 4:56 front and rear. Also your gas milage is going to get much worse and your engine is going to work at a higher RPM until you change the ratio.

with gear ratios already at 4.90 we are stuck with what we have.

read today where recalibrating the speedo on a toyota would correct the set points , would this work on the MS and does anyone make such a product.

It depends on if you have the off-road package or not. IF you do have the off-road package you are stuck with 4.64 gears. But if you don't, you can upgrade to the 4.64 gears form the 4.37 gears you have now. thanks for the info It's not the offroad package, but would fixing the speedo do any good. also was reading where an older montero had 4.90 gears would they work in a 98

The 4.90 gears only fit the 2000+ models. You would have to swop out both axles to get 4.90s I would think you would have a better chance of changing the shifing points on the computer then changing the speedo. But no one has done it, so I don't now. Getting the 4.64 gears will help. Your speedo and shifting points will be better. thanks 4 the feedback skidplate, about decided to drop down to 33s. It looks great w/35s but rubs just alittle to much, way to slugish, and can't afford all new axles

I wonder if a truspeed would work on the Montero Sport?
I think the ECU (computer) reads signals from the ABS system to calculate shift points, ABS brakes, etc.
