I have a 2000 XLS, with 33k miles. My warranty will expire on Jan 1, '03. I plan to keep it for two more years. I have to decide whether or not to purchase an extended warranty. So, I'm looking for some advice from people who have had (unfortunately), or have not had (hopefully), repairs between 33k and ~60k. I haven't had any mechanical issues yet (knock on wood), except for the power antenna. Thanks in advance.

My only advice would be to read the fine print! Our dealership has dealt with crooked aftermarket extended warranty companies that will actually do a statewide search for used (junkyard) components rather than paying for a new or even remanufactured parts. Some companies have very limited coverage that will surprise you as far as how little is covered.

Thanks Joel. How about if the dealership is pitching the plan? In this case it's the "American Road Bumper to Bumper Automotive Protection Plan".

Can't really help you there..... I work for the service department which is totally isolated from the sales area. I'm not sure which policy they sell... but there should be a list of items covered by your policy. Read it! and compare prices. Many credit unions will sell a new car insurance policy to their members even if the vehicle is being financed through another institution.

Some problems I had were: - Antenna Motor - Brake lights burnt out - some leaks here and there
Nothing really major if you take care of your 'Sport.

Three good places to get extended warranties:
1) Where you financed your original purchase. Many Credit Unions and banks have extended warranties available (years after you did your original purchase). They like to protect their interests, too!! Check with the institution with which you did your original financing and see if you can now purchase an extended warranty.
2) Insurance companies. Yep, we hate them...but quite often they offer extended warranties for good prices. Check with your insurance company and see what they offer.
3) Internet extended warranty companies. Some are good/some are crap. Be sure and read the fine print.
Bottom of the heap...car dealers. Nope, you probably don't want to go there. They make EXTREMELY good money by jacking up the premiums (hate to say it...I grew up in the car biz!).
BE SURE you buy any extended warranty BEFORE the factory warranty expires - rates will be MUCH cheaper.
Good luck and Cheers, Stod
