Hi guys:
I have a 2000xls with 24900
My brakes started squealing.
I guess I need new brake pads.
Questions:
Is 25k normal for a brake job or is it early?
Im gonig to install em myself, any tips?
Thinking about ceramic, should I spend the extra $$ or go with cheapo pads?
Should I turn the rotors?
Thanks

Checked my pads, today, while getting new tires. Looks like I've got about 5,000 more miles left ('01 LS 4x4 with 24,500 miles...and I live on top of a hill). I'm happy, I think, with this because I can't convince my wife to drive down-hill in L, or to keep her damn left foot from "resting" on the brake pedal!!!!
I've heard between 25K and 28K for the front pads. Hmmmm, interesting that I can get more mileage out of my brake pads then the POS Yoko Geolanders that came as stock tires!!!
Cheers, Stod

The last time I check the brake pads was during the 30k service. There is about 25% left. Now, I have about 36k on my MS. I think it is time to change the pads. I would like to try the after market pads. Any suggestion on brand/manufacturer? Also, does anybody know where can I find the step by step instruction on changing the brake pads for 2000 ES?

I just changed my pads for the second time (2K Sport 74000mi) and this time I went with Carbon Fiber pads. They come with a lifetime replacement warrantee and can be purchased at Autozone. It's their top of the line pads and run $69 a set for the front. First thing I noticed is they are very quiet. The Raybestos pads I had before the Carbon pad were very noisy. Second thing I noticed is the suckers stop you fast. They grab that rotor and wont let go or fade. I highly recomend them. Note: get your rotors turned. Only costs ~$10 a rotor and worth it. The thing about the Mits rotors is you will only get 1 or 2 turnings and then they need to be replaced ($110 ea.). They have really tight tollerances so they dont take more that a couple of turnings.

I went to the workshop to change the brake pads today but was told by the mechanic that the pads are still good and will probably last for another 10K miles . Curious enough I I took off both the front wheels after I got home to check the pads and found that there is still 5mm of pad at each side. I thought the OEM pads on the MS would only last for an average of 30K. I have about 37K now. About 85 - 90% of the mileage was from the freeway. This is the only reason I can think of that the usage of brake pads is minimized . Anyway, here's the price info I got from the Autozone today. The price is for the 2000 MS 2WD model: - PFC-Carbon-Metal for $42.99 w/ Lifetime warrantty.
- Albany for $19.99 w/ Lifetime warrantty.
- Raybestos Pg Plu for $80.99 w/ 1 year warrantty.
- The mechanic quote me $58 for the OEM pads from Mitsu + $25 for labor
Anyone knows what is the material of the OEM pads?
