All,
I'm thinking about buying the Overlander Aluminum Expedition rack for my 99 MS and was wondering what people thought about it. I looked at a Garvin rack a few weeks ago but it was pretty heavy and cost a mere $400+ for it. The Overlander rack looks good and it doesn't weight much and comes in at about $240 with mounting hardware. I want to put my 31x10.50 spare up there and a hi-lift jack and maybe a set of lights.
Factors for me are:
-Weight: I'm going to put an ARB on evetually so I want to conserve on the weight side to keep the gas mileage up.
-Amount of items I can carry/strap on to it.
-Easy of installation/de-installation
-Wind drag is minor but will cut the gas mileage
Thanks for any input!

I've got one! I bought it from Overlander a couple of months ago. Looks great and is VERY sturdy. I bought two different sets of mounts so I can easily transfer it between my Montero Sport, and my 95 Montero (all by myself- if that gives you any indication of how light it is and how easy it is to handle). I bought the one that is one size BIGGER than is recommended for the Montero Sport (which is the size recommended for the Montero). Gas mileage went down a bit as I am getting about 50miles less out of the trip meter before each fillup. Even then, it looks soooo good that I leave it on the truck despite the mileage loss.

Joel,
Thanks a million! So you bought the 60 inch one I take it? My delima now is whether to buy the 50 or the 60 inch one. Do you store your spare up there as well? And do you have a lamp set mounted on it? Those are two things I'm looking at putting on mine. Also have you looked at putting an air foil or something to cut down on the wind resistence, Thule makes one but I wasn't sure if it would fit or not.
Anyway thanks for the response. Skidplate and I were talking about this rack this morning on that OTHER board! ;-)
Later,
Todd
