Do you guys know the difference between replacement bulbs?
I also saw some replacements for the montero sport that had a rating of 7000*F for 20 bucks by HiLite. Are these street legal?
I noticed that the silverstars are rated at 4000*F. I was told that the higher the rating the brighter the bulb. It seems that most of the replacements are 4-5000*F. It seems that the HiLites at 7000*F may be too bright or hot. I may try them and see how they are. If worse comes to worse and I mess something up, I will just get the regular stock bulbs again. What are the stock halogens rated at?

Howzit
I think I may have purchased the bulbs you are talking about. HiLite Superwhite Xe 700 HID look bulbs. I got em on ebay for 14.95 plus shipping. Have had them for about 3 months. They are bright, but I havent had any complaints, no flashing by oncoming cars, etc. Made a left turn in front of a cop the other night w/o a problem, I was crossing my fingers! I actually bought another pair as a spare.

I found out that you have to have "DOT" certified lights for them to be legal. I guess that any lights that are street legal have the "DOT" symbol on the packaging and lights. I am probably going to return them because I don't want to deal with any hassles by cops. I am probably get the silverstars and try them out.

A little pricey, but I think the closest HID look bulbs are the PIAA Super Plasma's. From a distant, you can see a bluish and sometimes purplish tint on them. And while up close, they are very white.

The Eclipse and Galant have been known to burn up it's wiring harness to the headlamp and has released an upgraded wiring harness kit for those chosing to use upgraded bulbs. I've noticed over time that the ones that melt up have been using no name aftermarket lamps. From what i've read- lesser brands draw higher current to make up for the light that is lost from the tint they add to the bulbs to give it it's color. PIAA and CATZ both claim to draw the same current as standard halogens with the increase in lighting while providing the faux HID look. I can get you the part number of the harness if you'd like... As far as the MS, i haven't seen any of them burn/melt up it's harness from aftermarket bulbs yet. I have been running after market bulbs for the past 4 years without a problem though I have been sticking with brand name manufacturers.

Have a few questions about headlights: 1. Anyone have any pics that show Catz side by side with Silvania SS/ Osram SS? At least a first hand encounter? These are the 3 that interest me. Heard that Osram Silver Stars are different than Sylvania- Less HID look, but brighter.
2. If a cop pulls me over for my lights (think Sylvania are the only DOT approved), can't you bs and say their legal by stating a DOT approved model? Do they check the bulbs themselves (doubt it), or do they expect you to drive around w/ the original packaging to prove it? If they ARE legal, can you tell them to sit and spin, what?
I just want better vision w/o getting hassled. But if I'm destined to get pulled over anyway, I may as well have some crazy-*** lights.
Thanks, Jimi

Stictly speaking from the Donut eaters in California, the CHP are NOT going to pull you over for your lights. The new BMW's come factory with the bluish tint lights, so now they can't do anything at that level. They haven't been outlawed, to my knowledge. Aliikane is right about the DOT symbol, but most anything you buy in the states(ebay is exception because it could be foreign) will come with the DOT stamp, or there is one other stamp..I can't think of it right now, but theres one more that you can look for. I think its like National Highway assoc. or something like that.. but really you aren't gonna get pulled over for your lights...just don't give them a reason other than your foreign lights to pull you over and he won't be doing the inspection on them in the first place...

;D And one more note. The lights do not appear any brighter than factory. I had one factory and one of those 7000k bulbs in- no real difference. They look really cool even during the day cause the headlamps relfects the blue of the bulbs- so your lights look blue when the light hits them . And, they do not take any more power than the factories. Have had them for 6 months- still working. A good investment.
