All,
Is it "mandatory" that the timing chain be replaced at around 60k miles and why is it that the mitsu timing chain doesn't last near as long as other vehicles? I would think that they would have at least fixed this problem seeing as hoe the Gen 1 and 2 Montero/Pajero had the exact same thing. Anyway, I'm fast approching the 60k mark on my 99 and was wondering if I should start saving my money now?
Thanks,
Todd

FYI, montero sports have timing belts... not chain.
Mitsubishi Timing belts usually last close to 100K before breaking. But I would replace them anyway at 60K just to be safe because if that thing breaks, the cams stops moving, one of the valves will be left open and the pistons will hit it on the way up. Then you would need an engine rebuild. Mitsu charges a lot to do timing belts because you have to remove a lot of stuff to get to it.

60K is a typical replacement interval for most manufacturers as far as timing BELTs are concerned. I wouldn't push it too far past 60K for the sole reason of not having a warranty to cover your a$$... just keep in mind that "engine running time" has more to do with timing belt wear, that mileage alone....as stop and go city driving with lots of ilding time could put comparable wear on a Tbelt without neccesarily accumilating any mileage on the ODO than constant high speed driving conditions. With that being said...start saving your money!

Hey Joel, can you list the items that you would change along with the timing belt? I am getting close to replacing mine myself and want to make sure I have all the parts on hand when I do it. Everything from the belt to the gaskets would be cool. I will also be replacing the spark plus at the same time. Thanks in advance.

I'm right at 59900 on my Sport. Getting ready to replace the belt myself perhaps this weekend. I'd replace anything the tbelt rotates around...including the idler pulley, tensioning pulley, and hydraulic tensioner. As far as front cam and crank seals... I always recommend them, though I hardly (perhaps never) see them leak. Not an expensive part and it will save you time and money in the unfortunate circumstance that your seals should leak before the next Tbelt interval. H2o pump is basically your call as well.....not a cheap part, but a little insurance goes a long way! You won't be replacing any gaskets with the tbelt.... (h2o pump comes complete with gasket set), you should replace all three accessory drive belts too.
Joel, CA I already changed my plugs and wires at 58K.

Joel,
You think if I drove my sport out to Cali and brought a few cases of beer you could do mine as well? I'd help of course! ;-) Just kidding! Thanks for being a great resource to the Sport owners!
