Due to a constant lifter noise.... I've tried all of the flushes and oil additives to try and clean out possible trash I am going to have the heads rebuilt on my 98 MS 3.0. Does anyone have any recomendations on aftermarket cams? What's available? Are they worth the extra dollars? Thanks in advance for your input

How do you know that it is a lifter noise? Could be a bad spark plug... More info on your problem would help

RPW makes cams for the monty sport. They have stage 1,2&3 cams. Vision Imports sells them. If u are thinking about doing this the best time would prob be around t-belt and water pump time because it will have to be dissasembled to get to the cams. About a 14 hour job, so shop around for a reputable place that can do a t-belt and is willing to put the new cams in. I'ts too bad not 1 of the 30-40 diffrent monty sport owners that cruise the freeways and roads in central Ohio know about this site cause I found a place that will do all that work plus replace all gaskets on the engine for less than $750 including water pump and t-belt. With the cams costing $700 I can get them installed and the t-belt/ water pump work done for less tham some places charge for just the t-belt and pump. Clay

ronab2k... What other info would help? I'm not clear on what kind of a noise a bad sparkplug would cause. The engine seems to run as strong as it ever has. I have about 126K on it. Belt and cam seals were done at 110K. The motor has always seemed to have a ticking noise at start up and on colder days. The ticking normally went away after warm up. For the last few months the ticking comes and goes throughout driving, but is now there 80-90% of the time. I thought I had some trash making a lifter stick so I did a flush on 2 oil changes and I've tried thicker oil to try and see if the lifter was bleeding down. Any advice would be appreciated. I have been given a $2000.00 estimate to pull the heads and have them rebuilt so if it could be something else I’m interested in trying.
Thanks again..

bad spark plugs can cause misfire and cause your pistons not to be in sync....causing a "ticking" kind of noise...not to mention a noticeable loss of power. Especially since you have an older MS....how long ago did you have the plugs replaced?
Now that you mention the ticking noise going away after it warms up....then that can be a sign of a noisy lifter. I've always heard that changing to different brands and weights of oil frequently can add more carbon deposits in the engine..which can cause sticky lifters. What kind of flush did you do? Was it that Wal Mart engine flush bottle that you put in your oil, run the engine for 5 minutes and then do an oil change?

Try putting amsoil oil into the motor. Forget the additives and all that garbage.

Just for reference for you, we put some into my friends 86? maxima v6 wagon with 215k miles on it and after about 2000miles of use the motor sounded like it was new. Before it had been running rough and making all kinds of noises.
Anyways, it doesnt hurt to try if you are going to spend all that money to rebuild the head for a noise that isnt affecting driveability for you.
