ok i know there have been a lot of threads about shocks, but none that really answer my question.
i am looking for a semi-stiff shock to run, to eliminate the severe front to back roll. i read that the KYB monomax is pretty stiff for the front but what about the rear. i was thinkin KYB also.
i was looking at the Tokico TrekMaster R/T's but know one has wrote about them so i don't know how stiff they would be.
any other way to stiffin up the suspension would good advice too. i race my truck every sunday, and running on factory shocks are not cuttin it any more.
im not real worreid about ride quality to much, i would just like to eliminate the roll from front to back.
thanks,
~tony

Damn, uve been racing every sun? Is the rear end raising up on u when u power break? (and is it helping ur times). I have wondered about this 2 but I think that when I do a lift and go with the rancho 9000 which are adjustable I will be able to take the roll out at will. Clay

yeah i try to get to the track every sunday if the weather holds out. but yeah, the rear end will lift up on start and when i actually launch off it sinks down really far. thats why im lookin for a stiffer suspension.
i took pretty much everything out of my MS but the front 2 seats to lighten it up and i noticed a pretty good differance in launches. i was runnin a 11.3 consistantly and when i had my wife in the car i still ran 11.39. which surprised the hell out of me.
i plan on doin a 2 inch drop, but i want to get my shocks first before i do the drop.
also im tryin to find a five speed transmission for my MS. i have looked into all the labor and fabrication and its not going to be to bad. i just need the tranny and ECU to my knowledge. alittle help on this would be nice, if you know anything.
thanks, ~tony

I had the KYB on the front / rear and they are real stiff!!! I replace the rear with Rancho 5000 and they have too much bounce to the rear end. I'm waiting on the Monroe's shocks for the front and I will be able to tell you about them this upcoming weekend. From everything I've found on the Rancho 9000 has the adjustment knob from one to five that may work for you with a 2" lift and crank up the front. Check with Skidplate and someone else did a write up on how to do!!! I didn't want the lift!!!! So if I'm happy with the Monroe's on the front, then I will order some for the rear also! Good luck.

I support the Rancho adjustables, even though I've never ran them. I've heard only good things about them. Also, if you want to go ahead, but lowering your vehicle does nothing for racing. I do agree you need a stiffer suspension, but don't go with raising(even though I won't do anything but) or lowering. Try keeping it stock only because if you want a stiffer suspension, go with an airbag suspension supplement. Lowering or raising your MS only starts a chain reaction of problems, and I don't recommend it to those that aren't willing to deal with the falling dominos. Also, you might try spring helpers that go over your shocks, although they really stiffen things up, It should be just what you need for corners and the such.

Monroe on the rear work out great. I have to concur with AF Eagle 1 about the lift. I'm getting a better ride now and not hard ride. If you want stiff and that's what you get with KYB. Good Luck

You are still going to get the front to back roll with ANY shock you put on the montero sport because it is SUPER heavy. You need to consider going to a stiffer spring or installing air bags inside the springs if coil sprung or between the frame and leaf springs if it is leaf sprung. That is the only way you are going to get rid of the rear end "squat" on launch. Shocks control the springs. Shocks won't prevent the squatting, at least not in as heavy a vehicle as the Montero Sport...we are talking about 4500lbs+ Not a 3,000lbs rustang, I mean mustang.

Hey tony, We got rained out at the track but I stayed and shot the sh!t with the owner of the track and he said that the rear lifting up is a good thing cause the suspension is pushing the tires down not just raising the rear up which gives u better traction on the launch. He said u definatly dont want it too stiff of the rear to drop or wrench to 1 side or the other. Clay

I had RS5000's on my old Scout, and yup, they are stiff! I think I lost articulation unless I had an extra 1000lbs loaded up to make them work -- loved the RS5000 steering damper though. My MS OEM shocks are finally getting tired now, and I don't think I'd go RS5000.
I am curious if there is a Bilstien part# to fit? Anyone running Bilstiens or Tokico?

Hi,
I've been using Rancho 9000 series in the front and rear for about three years now. I am not satisfied. Front are still too soft for me even in the stiffest settings, rear are too stiff even in 5th position out of 9. Adjustable shocks are good, but when terrain is changing constantly, they are still at the same settings. In few days I'll install Bilstein HD both front and rear, they have self adjustable stiffnest valve, will tell you how it is. Also for the rear, after just 8000 miles my rear started bottming constantly with 5 people on board and surfing gear. I replaced spring with Eibach, same problem after 19000 miles. I'll try to put in Air suspension in the rear with old springs, will let you know what happens.
regards

Would the kyb make it harsh or make it so you can actually feel the road under you?
I would like something that would stop all the boat feeling.
Thanks

Check out the "help with shock setup" thread... Haven't seen much specific to KYB though.
