I have a '99 MS 4WD and want better braking! Does anyone know what is involved in a swap of brakes from a '00 or better to a '99? Basically I want to run the 314mm disc on the front opposed to the 276mm. I just want to know what parts I have to swap to achieve this. Also does anyone know of who carrys or makes a stainless steel brake line for the front and rear of our beloved sports?

If the lug pattern is the same you would probably just need the calipers and the rotors and pads. Very easy.

From the looks of things, it looks like all you'll need is the complete brake caliper assembly (including bracket) and rotors. The pads are the same through each year. At this point, you might be able to find some remanufactured units from the dealership to lower costs. Your Sport wont stop any faster after this modification, but it will be able to sustain repeated heavy braking without fade due to the larger rotor's ability to dissapate heat.
Keep in mind the the 15" wheels of the 99 and older sport will NOT be able to accomodate the larger rotor and caliper or the 2k and newer Sports
If you're really interested in this modification but you have the factory 15" wheels, you can also try using the caliper/rotor assembly of the 2K Montero. It has a much thicker rotor than the Sport. The Montero's rotor discard specs (1.0") is thicker than the original thickness specs (.940") or the Montero Sport and is guaranteed to fit your 15" wheels.

Thanx Joel What will increase the braking ability on our Sports? I have looked at getting a custom 13" rotor and 4 piston caliper setup, but I can't justify the expense if I can't get better braking. I'm looking for a firmer pedal (stainless lines offer less flexing under pressure) and a surefooted stop. Are there pads such as EBC green stuff or Ceramics that offer better stops w/out fade or is this another waste of time? I just want a safe vehicle and to offset the bigger rims I am going to run.

I'm a firm believer in using factory parts, but i've used a set of EBC GreenStuff pads on my 91 Acura and they sure as hell eliminated my constant brake pedal pulsation problem that kept recurring with the factory pads (when driven hard). And they surre as hell stood up to the abuse that i gave them. So i had to try them on my Sport. Basically, i've got a set of EBC GreenStuff pads on all 4 corners of my 98 LS4wd and love them to death. They are factory quiet, less dust on my chrome wheels, and they stop on a dime repeatedly without fuss or premature wear. I also have them on all 4 corners of my 95 Montero SR , which previously had worn out the factory pads in about 15K miles. After about 10K miles, they look as fresh as the day i put them in even though the rotors are sitting pretty at a hair above minimum thickness specs. I already needed new rotors in the rears ($$$ ) and couldn't afford new front rotors at the same time. I was still able to resurface them just a shade above the minimum specs but they are at the thinnest that the factory allows. The EBC pads are holding up great so far! Joel, CA

Some sports came with rear disc? Is it off of 4wd models or something?
Can those be put on the 00 and newer 2wd models?

4wd MS models came with rear discs. To make the conversion will cost LOTS of money and is not even remotely feasable.

I'm glad you hit on the subject of brakes, my 98' need pads all around. I've thought about just replacing them with the stock mitsubshi one that lasted 79k miles. Do you think EBC will last that long?

If it ain't broke- don't fix it. If you're happy with the results and mileage you got from the factory pads- then go with those. I have no idea how long these EBC pads will last- the main reason i bought them was to keep my wheels clean. I was crossing my fingers at the time that they would perform to factory standards. So far, they look like new on my full size Monty with over 12K miles on them (the factory pads couldn't go over 15K total)

If you dont mind brake dust so much, see if they make a set of axxis ultimates for teh MS.
I put a set on my mirage and they had to be the best pads ive tried. They were very dusty though.

I've found the rear brakes on the MS don't do much. Sure, they help stop the vehicle, but the fronts do most of the work. It sure feels that way.

The rear disc actually do help stop the MS ALOT- at least when compared to rear drum equipt Sports. The front brakes tend to last alot longer on 4wd Sports due to the rear discs.

I will agree Rear Disc > Rear drum on ANY vehicle....Unless you start comparing like F350 rear drum brakes to our rear disc brakes...

I needed new pads on my MS so I went with Hawk Performance Pads...I think that they are the best for stock Calipers. I found them here.......http://www.buybrakes.com/hawk/apps-Mitsubishi.html Peace.
