I just bought an 02 LTD. Is it possible to mount the spare in the rear like the big Montero? What do I do with the lic. plate? I've seen these in the mem. rides.

The full size "big" Montero's spare tire is mounted directly to the tailgate with a bracket that's attatched to a reinforced section of the door. On top of that, it has a rear tailgate that swings open from right to left- therefore it doesn't have to support the weight of a full size spare in the open (raised) position as a Montero Sport would mounted in the same fashion. The 97 and early 98 Montero Sports had an optional swing out rear spare tire carrier attached to a reinforced section of the rear quarter panel that also locked into a modified rear bumper stiker. Locking keys, door handle and all those other goodies were part of the mechanism that locked or released the swing arm from the bumper. Also included in this package was fully operation bumper mounted brake/tail/turnsignal lights in place of the rectangular reflectors in current models. There have been other inquiries about having this particular factory swing arm installed with no success stories to date.

If you find where to get one of the factory model ones let me know. I've been looking for a spare wheel carrier as well. There are a couple of firms that do them in Australia, namely Kaymar see www.kaymar.com.au, and www.4wdsystems.com.au, remember in Australia the montero sport is called a "challenger". I have seen a picture of the factory model in a review: www.4wheeloffroad.com/roadtests/131...val/index7.htmlHowever I have not been able to find out where to buy one. Joel is correct in saying that with this model tire carrier you also need to change your rear bumper. Let me know how you go with it........Good luck!

The only thing I could think of doing is buying or fabricating a rear bumper that has a tire carrier on it.

Just rip off that piece of plastic that is disguised as a rear bumper and have an off road bumper with a swinging tire gate fabricated, directly frome the end of the frame, like I did!! LOL
