I keep seeing talk about air bags and a weak suspension in the Montero Sport. I don't have a hitch on the MS, but someday I hope to have some toys to pull. Are you guys saying that I should just expect to get air bags and whatever else just to tow some ATV's? Or is this talk mostly due to the fact that some of your rides are older and the suspension is worn out?

the rear of the Montero Sport will bottom out when towing or if you load up the back end with people and gear.
It isn't weak, just bottoms out. The springs are a bit too soft. It is designed this way to provide a "more care like ride."
99% of America is happy with it. Those of us that tow, go off-road, or haul a bunch of gear and use it like a "Sport Utility Vehicle" find the rear suspension lacking.
The Old Man Emu 2" lift and shocks solved all of my issues.

Okay, so if I ever decide to put a hitch on it and I get some toys I should probably put the Emu on it? What is this thing rated to tow anyway?

You'd have to check your manual to see what it will tow. It varies based on year, engine size and model.
I put the Old Man Emu suspension in my '02 XLS and don't have any regrets. It definitely improves the ride on and off road. It also seems to ride better with a load than empty.

our 2001 XLS 4WD sport is rated to tow 5,000lbs with properly equipped trailer. i.e. surge/electric trailer brakes.
That being said I've towed close to the limit with no trailer brakes or surge brakes and not had a problem. Just have to think ahead about stopping and go easy on your brakes.

Well, that's just common sense when you're towing anything, but I'm glad to hear it can handle at least that much weight.
Thanks for the info.

I have a 99 ls 90,000 miles with stock suspension. This weekend I towed my 3000lb gross 300lb tongue wiehgt boat & trailer in addition to my fat a$$ and family. I was surprised how well the MS handled the 2 hour drive to the lake over a mountain. I had no problem with bottoming out.

I, on the other hand, think that if you are going to do anything heavy duty, you should probably just go with the air bags.
I have just about completely destroyed an OME Medium kit.
